o/lay misplaced ,cant select it
VS 11+.An overlay has moved way along the project(probably because
of ripple edit not applying). When at the clip where it should not be I am not able to find it in the time line.I have all overlay tracks enabled. The expanded or otherwise)timeline does not show the overlay so I am unable to select it to move or delete it.Help please .................Ken

If I have understood what you have asked I am now wondering if I
have got the right idea.Is it not true that if you can see an overlay in a clip then that overlay should show in the overlay track of the time line
directly below that overlay that is in the window?Where else could it be?

Yes. If you are seeing a picture-in-picture effect then both clips will be at the same place on the timeline (on separate tracks, of course).
If this is your case, and you can't find the other clip on the timeline, are you sure you have all the timelines showing?

Moving o/lay
Went back to the project and the offending clip, expanded the timeline to show all 6 overlay tracks. The moved overlay clip was in place on the 1st and only overlay track being used there. So there could be a number of reasons for this I expect- one being the project director could not see this after looking for it for some time, possible but I dont see how it could be missed. The other could be that it showed up after rebooting the PC

I see you have expanded the timeline to show all tracks but have you used the slider that reduces or enlarges the "width" of the timeline so that you see more of the duration of your project. OK it makes each clip look shorter but you see more clips in one view. If that doesn't make sense then post here and I will do a screenshot.

time line size
John,
I know what you are saying but surely what ever the size of the timeline the overlay track with the ovarlay clip in it will be directly under where the overlay is showing in the projects' preview window........Ken

Hi Ken
Yes you are perfectly correct. If the clip shows as an overlay in the preview window it must be on the timeline. You say that on rebooting the PC the clip became visible on the timeline. This means that you must have saved the project before rebooting? The overlay clip must have been there when you saved the project.

Edit
Just had another idea though. If the overlay clip was shorter than the main clip and you had accidently moved the little slider at the very bottom of the timeline then you could have moved the o/l out of sight. This would explain why when you rebooted the o/l appeared again in the timeline because by default VS starts with that slider fully to the left!

This is the only conclusion I can logically come up with. Just glad that it was you who suggested this explanation.the project director could not see this after looking for it for some time

All I can say is that if the overlay was in the timeline I could not see it after looking for some time.I did not reboot to try and solve the problem
in particular ,it appeared when I went into VS the next day.I am not a
green novice or a very experianced VS user but it seems to me I keep getting things happening that does not happen to many others. But with the help of this forum I dont suppose I will ever stop learning.
