Starting VideoStudio 7

Post by charlesh »

I have Ulead VideoStudio 5, 6 and 7. I only have the original Program CD for VS5, apparently I purchased the VS6 and VS7 as a download. I registered each with Ulead.
Recently I had to replace the motherboard and CPU in my computer (Dell Dimension 8300). I backed up everything, including the VideoStudio 5, 6, and 7 on a backup CD. Everything from the old MOBO was then transferred to the new one.
Now I have problem with starting the VS7. Clicking on the icon on the desktop gives me an error message " This application failed to start because uvipl.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem"
The file uvipl.dll ( 20 kb ) is there in the same folder (Local disk (C:) \ Program files \ Ulead Systems \ Ulead VideoStudio 7) with the vstudio.exe 1,468 kb
So why can't VS7 find uvipl.dll?
Also I can't find Ulead System with all VS 5,6 and 7 in Start > All program list. Why is it not there?
The only way I can start VS7 to go to Windows Explorer and in the same folder C:\Program files\Ulead Systems \ Ulead Video Studio 7 click on vstudio.exe. It then "loads" the program (several minutes) to start it.
Suggestion from error message to re-install the app does not work. From the back-up CD I made I can not start the new installation.

I don't know what the problem is... VS7 is kind-of old and maybe some newer updates to XP is are causing it problems. (That's just a wild guess.)

Sometimes, you have to manually "register" a DLL, although the installation progam should do it. (I've never had to manually regester a dll.)
The only way I can start VS7 to go to Windows Explorer and in the same folder C:\Program files\Ulead Systems \ Ulead Video Studio 7 click on vstudio.exe. It then "loads" the program (several minutes) to start it.
If that works, you can create a shortcut (to the exe) and copy that shortcut to your start menu and to the desktop. (I'll assume you know how to do that, since you apparently replaced your own motherboard.)

I don't believe XP does it, I have used the same XP Home with the old MOBO and VS7 worked.
I created a new shortcut before (.exe), but it does not work.
I know VS7 is old but it does everything I need. It is not the money to upgrade, but I got tired of "upgrades", they change the old routines and I have better use for my time and efforts to relearn the new app procedures. I went through that several times in the near past when I decided to upgrade other apps after I changed the Mobo.

I guess that when you transfered your back up files to the newly cleaned hard drive you just copied the program files to C:\ Program Files\
A program needs to be installed not just copied across. The installation process does in fact copy files to appropriate folders on you hard drive but it also "initialises" files and makes the all important Registry Entries. Just copying across will not do this. Have you got the old VS 5 disc. If so delete all the files you copied from the backup relating to Ulead and install version 5 from the disc. Then if you saved all the original upgrade downloads with luck you will find them on your backup disc. Just upgrade first 6 then 7. If you haven't got the original disc and/or the downloads then you must go to plan B.
I'm guessing you may be in the US. If so there is a boxed copy of VS 7 on the US Ebay site. It is here:
http://computers.shop.ebay.com/Software ... S_Software
There are a number of copies much cheaper of the SE version. Avoid this. If none of this works then try begging a copy of the VS 7 disc. As you have your own legitimate licence number this is not illegal. (well not really  ) And do a new re-install. It will pay you to delete all files relating to Ulead that you copied from your backup disc.

Thank you Mitchell;
Actually, I didn't wipe the hard disks. I replaced the Mobo. I backed up all the files just in case onto CD-s. When I am having problems to start VS7, I am trying from the original hard disk. What also puzzles me, why is the whole Ulead folder (with VS 5, 6 and 7, each in a separate folder under Video Studio) missing from the Start > All Programs list. I don't see this with any other files. With Windows Explorer I can locate the VS exe (see my original message above) and start VS7 only from there. It will also give several error messages, like can not locate a .dll file etc, but I can start the operation with a lot of run-arounds. Pain in the...
Thanks for the advice about e-bay. I will try to get it. Certainly simpler than to fight the exiting problem.

Please click here --> Image so that we can then view your system specifications.

We have no idea HOW you created your "New machine." is your "Old C Drive" your "New C Drive" or is it now a secondary drive and has a different drive letter?

Have you just popped your hard drive out of the old computer and put it into the new - if so your operating system should nag you for various new drivers relating to the motherboard and any other new bits of hardware such as sound card, video card, network card etc. but ..... if your old drive is now the master drive of your new computer - it should all work. There are a few bits of software that insist upon serial number / registration / activation confirmations - Windows itself is one of them! - however VideoStudio should "just work."

I just replaced the Mobo Dimension 8200 with a Dimension 8300. It is practically the same except faster CPO and bus. Same housing, same disks, same CD ROM same DVD recorder, everything is the same except the Mobo and the CPU. The "new" C: drive is exactly the same as the "old" and is still the primary with the XP home and all the apps and drivers. I didn't "wipe" the drive, it still has all the previous apps etc. so I didn't have to "transfer" them from the "old" to the "new".

Ulead Systems folder is still on the "old" drive with subfolders of VS 5, 6 and 7 and Ulead PhotoExpres 2SE. and are accessible with Windows Explorer.

Ulead Systems folder is the ONLY one which disappeared from the Start > All Programs list but it is still in The C:\Program files\. PhotoExpress 2SE still starts from its icon on the Desktop (!) properly but not VS 7.

I strongly suspect that what has happened is that your old motherboard and/or processor was broken and this was why you had to replace them.
Unfortunately whatever it was that was broken has caused some minor corruption with your hard drive.

Firstly run the disk checking tool
How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP.
You did not mention changing your RAM - that might also be at fault, try running a RAM checker

Whilst I do not normally recommend a Registry Checker
In these circumstances it is worth using one.

Next thing to do is to work your way through the following link
Troubleshooting your computer

Actually there was nothing wrong with the old Dimension 8200 mobo but it supported only 1 GB RAM. I installed a program which required minimum 2 GB so instead of buying a new PC I "updated" it by replacing the 8200 with the 8300. This has a higher bus speed therefore the processor had to be replaced too. The new one is much faster as well.

Anyhow, I followed right now someone's advice and created a new shortcut on the desktop. Then Start > Run > Type in Start Menu (Enter) opens a new window and I copied the shortcut from the desktop into this Program folder.
Now by clicking on the shortcut (icon) on the desktop, it brings up this Program folder and I have to click on the vstudio.exe to start VideoStudio7.
I also found vstudio.exe now listed in Start > All Programs list. So far so good.
But could I by any means start VS7 directly from the desktop without this extra step?
I have another question:
When finally VS7 starts an error message subwindow opens titled: Load MPEG vio Driver Error;
The text is: C:\Documents and Settings\All users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead Video Studio\7.0\uvs.ini But clicking OK the VS7 program will start. What is this and can it cause problem while working with VS7? How can I cure it?

Hi Charles

Create a short cut on the desktop,
right click file vstudio.exe and select ¡¥send to¡¦ ¡Vdesktop, create shortcut.

Things to try:--
The text is: C:\Documents and Settings\All users.WINDOWS\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Ulead Video Studio\7.0\uvs.ini

Temporary rename the folder 7.0 to 7.0copy
Reboot Video Studio, vs may generate a new folder 7.0 on start up. Worth a try

Hi Charles

more info

I have an old pc which has VS 7 installed, interestingly it is giving similar problems.

Go to Patches and updates:-
http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 7911963266
Download the PDF for the various links¡K¡K¡K..

There are several patches for VS 7 but one for PatchForMpeg.exe
I have applied this patch and the Load MPEG vio Driver Error has gone

Maybe you should consider the other patches as well

Good luck

e-mail me and i will send some further VS 7 details.

Hi Trevor;
I created a new shortcut on the desktop for Vstudio7.exe and now it works, I can start the program directly.
Renaming the folder to "copy" didn't work.
I tried your suggestion and downloaded the patch for the MPEG vio problem. It is for Windows 98/ME, it did not work for my XP Home.
Thank you for your support.

Hi Charles

It looks like you are left with re-installing the program, and if you cant find the download files then your a bit snookered.

I have three files in my VS 7 backup disc
uvs7engupgrade.exe 119 Mb is the main program
UVS7EffectEng.exe 97 Mb (is the extra effects)
UVS7_Patch_E.exe 6.8 Mb (the update)

When I corrected the problem on my old pc I also ran the patch, and the Effects file.
Not sure which had the desired effect.

May be doing a search of your hard drives --- just on the off chance?????????

Hi Trevor

I have none of the three progs in my PC
As I said, reinstallation is not simple, I have only the orig VS5 disk, VS6 and 7 were installed from purchased download upgrades.
But on the advise of John Mitchell (see above) I just purchased a boxed new VS7 on the e-bay. I am waiting for delivery and will install it. Let's see.
Thanks again.

Hi Charlesh
Before you install from the new CD make sure you uninstall all the old copy completely including going into the registry. Steve has done a very good guide to a Clean re-install of VS. I will see if I can find it and post the link.
