Slow HD editing in VS12 (Pro X2)

Post by altzone »

I'm trying to edit HD (1280x720) MP4 video in VS12 and it's really slow when trying to trim clips, it just just isn't smooth when I move the trim cursor, this makes it very difficult to trim stuff. And given this is 90% of my editing work, it's not going to be tolerable.

My system is no slouch I think, I do 3D CAD work on it no problems. XP, 2GB, Intel E6750 Dual core 2.66GHz, NVidia 3D graphics card.
Clip playback is also jerky.
System usage jumps to 65% when trimming clips.

My old SD 720x576 MPEG2 editing was flawless.

Any tips on how to improve this? (and no, I don't want to upgrade my hardware)

Thanks
Dave.

Please click here --> Image so that we can then view your system specifications.

If you have XP then:
Creating a Video Editing Profile.

No matter what operating system you have, you could also use Proxy Files.

If read your hardware spec correctly you have 2GB of main memory and that is insufficient any more. Your best upgrade is to figure out the max memory your system can take and buy it as fast as possible.

I would guess that most of us have no more than 2GB of RAM and edit OK.

Yes but here's the solution to your promlem Steve. Just lie and alter your profile to show 4Gb. Who's going to know? We won't tell.

I think you will be surprised how much doubling your main memory can do for improving the performance of your pc. If you are updating the OS from Microsoft anytime there is an update available, I find that it gets slower with each update; more memory brings its performance back.... Al

You are, of course, perfectly correct. I well remember the huge difference experienced when using Windows 3.0 (That's the one before TRue Type fonts were recognised) when I upgraded from 1 to 2 Mb (Yes Megabytes). The cost was astronomical. Equivilent in todays values to buying a really high spec computer. Of course my Hard Drive was huge, all of 20Mb. My most used Program fitted onto a 1.4 mb floppy. He Ho those were the days, come back DOS all is forgiven. :D
