Full-size insert video

Post by pvreditor »

When editing with VS Pro x2, I want to insert video using the overlay track. When I drag-and-drop in the overlay track, the video is in a little rectangle that I can stretch to fill the frame. However, after rendering, the inserted video that filled the frame when editing is now squished vertically. How do I get it to fill the frame after rendering? I did this once before but forgot how I did it.

Thanks for the help!

Hi

Have you manually updated Direct x.

See the announcement at the top of this forum

Vs X 2 seems to have lots of problems and updating direct X does improve things.
worth the effort........

A couple posters in that Direct X thread mentioned that their computers are not connected to the Internet, and the consensus was that these computers did not need to get the new version of Direct X. That's the case with my computer, too... it has never been connected to the Internet and I use it only for video and photo editing. (It's so nice to not have to worry about viruses and the slowdown caused by antivirus software.) I have an older computer that I use for the Internet.

There's gotta be a way to fix the insert sizing problem I have, since I have done it before. I just don't remember how.

Hi Bob

I am not saying that installing Direct X will cure this particular problem.
But there have been a lot of problems cured by installing Direct X, It does help, from experience when using the trial version.
But with all thye problems I¡¦m just glad I haven¡¦t taken the option to upgrade to X2

Ok
Download the direct X file and transfer it to the pc using Video Studio, and install.

There is also a ¡¥patch¡¦ from Corel that also fixes things, again you need to download this file.

Thanks Steve, for pointing me toward that thread. I read through it and what can be done with overlay tracks is impressive. However, I didn't see an answer for my question: How do I make the overlay video so that it is the same size as the main video? Simply stretching the overlay box doesn't work. It appears to work, but it is the wrong size after rendering.

I know this can be done because I did it before. When I finally figured it out, I remember thinking that it was easy. But now I've forgotten the special magical incantation needed to make this one thing work.

I have to say that it's completely annoying that stretching the video so that it LOOKS like it's the right size, only to be the wrong size after rendering, is quite annoying. It's been a major time waster for me.

Anyway, any tip on how to make the insert video the same size as the main video would be greatly appreciated.

I don't understand. If you want an overlay video to cover the entire screen, why not place the video in the main timeline?

Hi Bob

From File ¡V Preferences there is an option to fit video to full screen for overlay tracks.
Also
From the timeline:-
Select the clip in the overlay track.
Right click clip in preview window, select ¡¥fit to screen¡¦, repeat and select ¡¥keep aspect ratio¡¦

Those options will fill the screen.

Rendering.
Are you using the same aspect ratio to render the video as the project settings?

Knowing the project properties, the video properties and the render properties may help us.

Al Jimenez

If you wished to keep the main video sound track but fade to another video, maybe another video angle of the same subject then the overlay track would achieve this.

I want to keep the audio from the main timeline and cut to a close-up for a second. Then come back to the main track, all the while keeping the audio from the main track. If I insert the clip into the main timeline, then I have to deal with the audio loss caused by the insert. I'll be cutting to a close-up perhaps three times over 15 seconds, then repeating this a few more times. Plopping the close-up on the insert track seems ideal for this... if the sizing is right.

Thanks, Trevor. What I have is a talking head (me) explaining something, then a close-up of the item I'm describing. I want to cut to the close-up while maintaining the audio track of me speaking. I want the close-up to fill the screen, just like the main video does.

I'm shooting this with my AVCHD camcorder (Canon HF11) and editing as HD, rendered to a WMV/720p file. It will ultimately be loaded to YouTube.

I thought I had tried the "Fit to Screen" and "Maintain aspect ratio" options but will try those again tonight. Thank you very much for that suggestion.

I do that and it doesn't work. What I don't remember is tryng "maintain aspect ratio" and "Fit to screen" together.

But thanks for the suggestion.

Hi
Using ¡¥Keep aspect ratio¡¦

Most DVD¡¦s or videos are either 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio.
Unfortunately the frame size is not.
For standard NTSC --- 720x480 is used but this is not 4:3

When we add the video to the top track the video is automatically stretched to fit 4:3.
A process called ¡¥Non-Square Pixel Rendering¡¦. Keeping the aspect in proportion.

When we add a video to the overlay track, it is initially in proportion but a smaller version. About ¼ size.
Using Fit to screen and keep aspect is usually ok.

Now you say you are editing AVCHD, this may changes things a little when dealing with widescreen and rendering to WMV/720p, you may only need the fit to screen.
I don¡¦t have X2 to edit AVCHD so cannot compare the frame sizes, but I am sure they will be different. WMV being 1280 x 720 or 1440 x 1080.
Have you tried Div X.

But threes a lot going on hear and not having AVCHD capability I feel I cannot comment much more.

But make sure your project properties match your AVCHD frame size.
And did you update Direct X ?

For what it's worth I have tried to replicate this problem on VSx2. I have mixed and matched HD and SD video clips and tried all HD and all SD. I just right click the rectangle in the preview screen, choose fit to screen. There is no distortion after rendering to a DVD folder, then playing back the VOB in WinDVD 9. :?

On my system, when I right-click and select "Size to fit screen," it expands the video beyond the top/bottom edges of the main video in the timeline. Therefore, instead of using "Size to fit," I've been manually dragging the edges of the insert video box so that they exactly overlay the main timeline video. When editing, this looks perfect. However, when rendered, this inserted video is wide enough but the top and bottom edges no longer cover the main video.

All of my video is shot using the same camera (Canon HF11) at the same resolution (1920x1080i). The frames I'm trying to overlay are the same size as the main timeline video.

Thank you for following up to see if this problem can be replicated. I'm sincerely impressed with the follow-up I've had on this request.

Trevor, no I haven't downloaded the latest Direct X version yet, as I've been away from that computer. However, if the guidance above fixes my sizing problem, I'm good to go. FWIW, I enjoy the interface and editing with Pro x2... I just wish it didn't glitch with AVCHD files and a couple things (like this sizing problem) were easier to figure out. I've edited many little HD projects with this and posted them (in HD) on YouTube. It's really a lot of fun.

Hi
Some things to try.............
I assume you have done this already but-----Edit your Project Properties to Mpeg 2 to match your video files properties with a frame size of 1920 x 1080
How does that affect the overlay track.

If the same:-
Video is normally stretched to fit the 16:9 frame.
Your video is a perfect 16:9 at 1920 x 1080 basically using square pixels.

From Project Properties
Try deselecting the ¡¥Perform non square pixel rendering option¡¦
This option is selected by default.
