Transitions make program crash

Post by metmot »

I recently reformatted one of my computers with XP pro for a variety of reasons. I used the same OS which was on it before. It is no speed burner but I have used it extensively in the past for photo montage production. It's an AMD Athlon 2800 @2GHZ with 2 gigs of ram. An old Socket A computer.

Anyway since I reformatted, reinstalled VSx2 and the patch, updated flash and direct x and installed my other software I use, it crashes immediately upon selecting a bunch of different transitions. Every transition in the wipe folder and some others. I admit I don't use these often but I hate software with bugs. Also one of these transitions is in my favorites and I can't delete it from there. The second I right click it, the program crashes and gets the old "has encountered a problem and has to close" box from microsoft.

Any Idea how to attack this problem without reformatting yet again? I have reinstalled VSx2 several times on my two machines without ever having an issue like this before.

Try deleting:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Stephen\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0"
Then restart VideoStudio.

Replace Stephen with your windows user name.

I tried that and also deleting the same folder in "All Users".

No help.

I then uninstalled VS and searched for and deleted all left over folders and files with Ulead or Corel in the name from the C drive.

Reinstalled the program and patch. Still the same.

This seems to eliminate VS as the culprit and point to an issue with Windows. Does this sound like sound logic?

Two years ago when I reformatted my HD, I had the same issue with the program closing each time a transition was inserted. What I did was delete the original captured movie & recaptured it. This worked. It seemed the original file was defected. Everything worked well the next 2 yrs until........

Last week I did a clean install from XP to Win7. After experimenting with VS12, same problem, VS12 keeps closing after a transition is inserted. I deleted the original captured file, but haven't had the chance to recapture the original from my camcorder. I hope to have time this evening to experiment more & will report back tomorrow.

Other issue was the Canopus FX transitions do not work in Win7. The FX Transitions have been discontinued per Canopus web site.

Interesting information Rich,

I am thinking of Windows 7, not for this socket A machine but for my other more modern one.

This particular machine I am having trouble with I have not captured any footage with it. I use my other computer exclusively to capture as it's way more powerful. The program crashes as soon as you click on the transition, whether or not you have any other media involved with a new project. I thought it may be a window's update issue since I didn't allow any of them as this computer is not on the net. No dice.

I have noticed some other odd behavior of this thing since the reformat and I may just do it all over again.

Have you tried using a couple of the sample videos and placing a transition between them. That would rule out a corrupt video.
Try various transitions to see if it is all transitions or just certain transitions causing this.
Check the Windows Error log to see if it provides any clues.

About half of my 3D transitions in X2 immediately hang my machine
They work fine in VS9. Tried patch. Tried reinstalling X2. Added new DirectX.(Aug 2009) Dropped in older version of Flash.ocx. Nothing helps.

I also had this same problem of certain transitions crashing the program. I had this happen while I was demo-ing this software. (I was trying to decide which product to buy. I decided on VideoStudio. I probably wouldn't have if I hadn't found this fix.) I downloaded my purchased version, uninstalled the demo version and installed the purchased version (for some reason the demo version wouldn't accept my purchase code.)
I had fixed the demo from crashing using the technique(s) below. I had hoped the purchased version wouldn't crash, but it did. Fortunately the fixes worked on it just as it did the demo.

This page details a way to get your transitions working again in X2. Read below the review in the comments section, Richard Melvin's solution.
http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/vid ... /9069.aspx
Basically he has you copy old working filters into the X2 folders. (I had to download a demo of v.11 to do this, but it worked.

This link is to a technique for importing transitions from v.10 into v.12. I don't think I ever used this trick to get my transitions to work, I'm pretty sure the link above fixed my problem, but I can't say for sure if I used this one also. I'm including this for the sake of being thorough.

I hope this helps you, there is nothing more frustrating to me than buying a new piece of software and it crashing from the very beginning. Please let us know your results.

The OPs problem has to do with transitions, while the article above relates to video filters. But I am assuming by Anthony's post that the fix also works for transitions (?).

Black Lab, you are correct, it was transitions that were mentioned while I was having problems with filters. However, I think I was also having problems with some of the transitions as well, some of them were crashing VS (I think...) I was wanting so badly to pass along the info I had that fixed my crashing problem I overlooked that detail. :? Maybe it will help regardless tho...

A miracle!
I did a slight variation of the above suggestion and it worked!

I removed the entire vfx_plug folder from Programs/Corel/VideoStudio 12 and replaced it with the same folder from VS11. Then I renamed vfx32.dll vfx32.dll.v12 and replaced it with the version from 11. The transitions now work!

I don't know if I'm missing any X2 transitions or not. I'm just happy the ones I need are now working. Thanks for the lead!
