Re: Inserting video clip into existing project?

Post by BAW9DV »

Hi,

Sorry but I cannot find anything specific to my question using the forum search function, so here goes....

Using Coral VideoStudio Pro X2 (version 12.0.98.0) - last night I completed a DVD project of our United States holiday undertaken earlier this year. Basically, I stitched together several clips taken with the Panasonic DV camcorder after editing them slightly here and there. Finishing the project, I did the titles, bits and pieces and burned it to a Dual Layer DVD (the project was 1 hour and 25 minutes long and would not fit onto a normal 4.7GB DVD-R).

This morning, I discovered that my wife had taken some more video (MOV files) from the holiday using her digital camera, which I would like to have included in the project.

I have managed to import the MOV files into the project library but cannot seem to "insert" the movie files into the project at the place I want to insert them! VideoStudio Pro wants to "tag" them onto the end of the project "after" the last section of video...

Anyone explain how I can insert these video clips into the project without having them tacked on the end? There are only two clips each about 22 seconds long, but they are important to the project and I would like to place them into the project before burning a new DVD copy.

Thanks for your time,

regards,

You simply drag them to the timeline at the point at which you want to insert them. Nothing more than that.

Are you sure you are trying to insert them in the project (VSP) and not the finished video file (MPG)?

Hello there,
You simply drag them to the timeline at the point at which you want to insert them. Nothing more than that.
Yep, tried that - didn't work. The programme insists on addiing it to the end of the project.
Are you sure you are trying to insert them in the project (VSP) and not the finished video file (MPG)?
Yes. I have already burned the project to DVD, but have not "rendered" it in any way before I burned it. I know that the preference is to render a finished video file first before you burn it, but I have had failures when trying to do that. So far, I have successfully burned several finished projects straight to DVD without incident, although this was my first Dual Layer burn.

I tried to insert using the StoryBoard view first. When that did not work, I switched to time line view but again, it seemed unable to insert anything.

Sorry if I'm being thick here - but I have the MOV file now imported into the Library, so what is the procedure for placing it into an exact point in the timeline (I need it to go in before a similar clip to as it progresses on from the preceding clip if you know what I mean).

Thanks for your kind help,

To reiterate jeffs point are you actually opening the VSP file? If so then if you want to pt the new file between two existing clips it should work. If you want to inser part way through an actual clip, the use the split at the point when you wish to insert.
You can only do this if you are using the original VSP file!

Do you have Ripple Editing enabled?

I also agree that with the project file (VSP), you should be able to drop a clip in between other clips. However if you've mistakenly opened a video file, you would need to do as John suggests, split the video clip.

Mitchell,
To reiterate jeffs point are you actually opening the VSP file?
Yes, I am. I run Videostudio and then select FILE/OPEN. I open the file (called USHOLS-09.VSP) and it loads the project which has 82 clips of film totalling 1 hour and 24 minutes of footage. In Storyboard view, I then scroll along to the point between the two clips where I want to insert the first new clip of video (between clips 59 and 60).

I then right-click to select Insert Video and then select the MOV file from the dialogue, that I want to insert. I click OK and I find that VideoStudio takes me to the 82nd clip of film (right at the end of the project) and inserts the clip there making it the 83rd clip!

I tried the same thing in TimeLine view and I get the same result.
If so then if you want to pt the new file between two existing clips it should work. If you want to inser part way through an actual clip, the use the split at the point when you wish to insert. You can only do this if you are using the original VSP file!
Yes, see above. So far, it seems that the only way I will be able to do this is to delete all clips from 59 onwards (or try to save them eslewhere), insert the video clips I want and then put the other clips back.

Sorry, but unless I'm missing something really big here, I am not allowed to insert a video clip in the middle of an existing project.

Thanks for your time,

Aha, but did you try dragging the clip to the timeline, as I suggested?

Yes, using the Insert command will only insert the clip to the end of the timeline (a bit of a misnomer). But if you drag and drop the clip it will truly be inserted at the point at which you drop it.

When you say " then right-click to select Insert Video " what exactly do you right click?
All the advice in this thread suggests drag and drop from the library into timeline or storybook view but if you really want to go with, rt click, insert video then this will put your chosen clip on the end of the project. Then you can select that clip in the timeline or storybook view and drag it to your chosen position. Easier to do in storybook view IMHO

Just to show drag and drop does work I have done a short screen record of drag and drop in action on the storyboard. Go to this URL
http://www.jmwebsites.co.uk/dragdrop.avi
Save the avi file to your desktop then double click it. It will open in your video viewer. It should show OK in full screen.

Mitchell,
When you say " then right-click to select Insert Video " what exactly do you right click?
Ok, usually most programmes have a right-click option which drops down a menu. Firstly, I right-clicked in the space between the two clips, whilst in StoryBoard view, where I wanted to insert. Up popped a dialogue box which led me to the MOV files on my hard drive. As you said, they got inserted into the end of the project.
Ok, next I tried to right-click over the MOV file shown in the Library - and the same menu came up and again, it got dropped at the end of the project.

Strangely enough, I did try drag and drop at first before all this but it didn't work.

But you know what? It just now worked fine!

I left-clicked the mouse over the MOV file in the Library and dragged it into the space between the two clips - and it worked perfectly! Go figure, as our American friends would say!

It worked for both clips that I wanted to add. I just then moved all the title overlays I had to co-incide with the points in the film where I wanted them (because by adding the two clips, I'd shifted all the overlays out of synch!).

Must have been a "slip of the mouse" on my part the first time round. I guess you get used to right-clicking everything for options and forget about drag and drop. I'll know in future.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread for your kind help and advice.

cheers,

Lee

You could have used "Ripple Editing" to hold those title clips in sync with your clips to save sliding them along manually.

Thanks for that. I'm still learning how to do all this.

I started last year when my wife bought the Panasonic DV Camcorder. I began with ULead VideoStudio 9 (as it was then) and found that I could deal with it a lot better than the others that I looked at (Sony Vegas, Pinnacle Studio, etc.)

When we started to film in earnest, I decided to buy Coral VideoStudio Pro X2 and I'm slowly working with it and trying to understand all the options available to me.

Trying to introduce video editing to someone like me who has no concept of how it works is difficult - but I have managed to put together several holiday DVDs now and I'm moving forward.

Its largely thanks to the excellent advice found on this forum that I'm able to get as far as I have!

My sincere thanks to you all here.

Regards,

Lee
