Re-installing X2 in Win 7 installed old version of DirectX

Post by dalemccl »

EDIT: Sorry, I thought I was posting this in the Windows 7 thead, but obviously I posted in its own thread instead by mistake. Mod, please move this if you think appropriate. Thanks.

I installed Windows 7 Pro last week. It was a clean installation, so I have to re-install all my applications. Tonight I re-installed VS X2 Pro. As it was installing, one of the status messages it popped up said that it was installing DirectX Nov. 2007. That is an old version and probably overlaid the one that comes with Windows 7, which I think is DirectX 11.

I don't see a DirectX 11 update on Microsoft's website. There is the August 2009 update, which I had previously applied when running X2 under Vista, but I am not sure that update applies to DirectX 11.

How can I restore DirectX to the version that Windows 7 installed?

Thanks.

Thanks for the link. I will check it out. In the meantime I decided to go ahead and apply the August 2009 DirectX update to see what happens. The Windows 7 DirectX tool now says the version is 11.

I'd be very careful about applying DirectX updates to Win7 unless it is very specifically included in the systems it is specified for. AFAIK, the August update is up to and including DirectX 10 but as you know, Win 7 uses a new DirectX 11... But I assume the update will simply not install if it detects 11... At least I hope so!!

Ken, after applying the August 2009 DirectX update, I used the Win 7 DirectX diagnostic tool to check the version of DirectX and it said version 11.

However, after seeing your reply, I checked the description of the August 2009 update on Microsoft's website and it says it is version 9.27.1734. I am not sure whether that version number references the Direct X version or is just the version number of the patch itself. The list of operating systems the patch applies to does include Win 7.

Somehow I ended up with version 11 after this series of events:

1. Installed Win 7 and had version 11 (presumably; I didn't check).

2. The VS X2 Pro installer installed the November 2007 version of DirectX, resulting in version ??. (I think it said "November 2007" in the message it displayed during installation. It is whatever version was on the VS X2 Pro installation disc).

3. Applied the August 2009 DirectX update.

Maybe I should apply the DirectX 11 download referenced in the link provided by Mitchell65 in this thread.

I haven't done much with VS since installing it in Windows 7, other than a very quick test. So far, it seems to work the same as when I used it with Vista except for the button problem in the disc burning module that others have reported in the Windows 7 topic. (Misaligned/missing buttons for things like invoking the menu to change settings. Users posting in that topic have found that you can use keyboard short-cuts as a work-around.)

The Windows 7 topic, if you haven't seen it, provides more detail. It is a sticky topic near the top of this VS forum. (I had actually intended to post my original message in that topic, but accidentally posted it as its own topic.)
