I have e-mailed Corel to see if they will supply a disc.

I cannot find the zip file, so I'm pretty sure I did not save it. So I dont have a registration/serial no for the product.

Sadly as you can't open the program you can't read the serial number which is normally shown via Help then About.
Hope you have some success with Corel. Make sure you have a recrd of when and how much you paid. Keep this handy, Corel may ask for it. Did they not email you confirmation of purchase? If so is the serial number not shown there? You must have had it when you uploaded the sistware!
Edit
Just a thought, you may have the Zip file on your PC, to make sure try this (I know you have Vista and I am on XP but you will probably recognise this idea)
Click Start Then Search then All Folders and Files and in the box type *.ZIP. Click search. This will find all ZIP files on your system. It might just be there somewhere

If you registered it with Corel, just go to their website, log-in, then click on the Your account link, then finally View your products link. This will provide you with a list of all your registered Corel products and the serial numbers.

If not well then there is one more way... You need to open the registry editor (regedit), then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio\12.0\Installer and in the right pane look for Serial Number...;)

Thanks, guys, you are very patient. I did find my serial/purchase key number. I went back to Corel, re-downloaded the upgrade, removed the previous one, installed the new download. Still getting the same error re screen resolution.

Is there any other option before going for a refund :? It seems crazy that I can't use this product when I have the screen resolution they specify, and higher.

Firstkly while you have the serial number and a copy of the installation files please view:
Lost Serial Numbers and Software.

Next - you need to check your windows error log.

Downloaded upgrade to VS Pro x2 will not initialise.

Thanks Steve,

I found the Error Log, but I have no idea what I am looking for. There are loads of entries, some relating to VS 10 Plus. I followed the links that you suggested, but found them quite difficult for a non-tech person like myself.

I did look at the Corel VS Prox2 'read me', which I can open. It listed the drivers needed. I have them all but they are newer versions. There was one item listed that I could not check out....Microsoft Windows Media encoder, but I suspect that this is installed or I could not use my current VS software???

The 'read me' did advise un-installing your previous version once your upgrade was installed, but says that some files common to both versions could be lost. They can be re-instated, but using, the install/ remove/repair feature, and as I reported earlier, I don't seem to have the 'repair' option, as I don't have a disc for the upgrade.

Would you advocate the un-install route? ( I do have the disc for my 'old' version) Can you give more advice relating to the error log?

Apologies for banging on, but I don't like to be beaten, and I think with computers you have to be like 'a dog with a bone'!

OK here is what I would do.
You have your VideoStudio X2 installation files.
You have your VideoStudio X2 serial number.

To perform a "Clean upgrade" it will ask you for the serial number of a previous version, so before doing anything else, start up your old version of VideoStudio. Go to the Help [?] button (Top right of screen) and select "About". Now carefully write down the serial number of your old version.
Keep a copy as a text file on your computer somewhere - if you follow my advice about making a CD/DVD containing your installation files and serial number - make sure you also save a copy there.

Next - uninstall ALL your VideoStudio installations - X2, VideoStudio 11 - any other versions you may have. The instructions to do this are here:
Re-installation of software products
This procedure goes that little bit deeper than simply uninstalling a program from the Windows Control Panel.

Now that you have rid the computer of your old VideoStudio program(s)
Make sure your computer is up to date with all the Microsoft Windows Updates. Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX.

Reboot your computer.

Now install VideoStudio X2 - it will ask for that serial number and will also ask for the serial number of your earlier product.
Install any bonus material and update packs.

Let us know how it went.

Thanks Steve,

I will attempt to follow your directive.

Incidentally, I did find my error log and there were various issues reported on it from the date I downloaded the VS upgrade. There were event Id's such as 1001, 8194, 8193, 1530, 1000(100), 4261, 1002, 3013 :?: some related to VS10, others the 'registry file', etc. don't know what I should do about these, if anything.

When I installed VS10 I had to get a patch from Microsoft to enable it to work with Vista. Do I need to remove that as well?

Thanks for your patience and help.

Never heard of a patch from Microsoft to enable VS10 to play on Vista.
As you will no longer have VS10 installed it will not be required.

Steve,

I followed your directive to the best of my ability, but VS Prox2 still failed to launch, with the same screen resolution error message.

There were some instructions I could not carry out. For example, your instruction no 5. The Folder [E188D20....]was not listed, so I could not delete it. It was also unavailable in REGedit. I have not installed any patches as I am assuming that this download will be up to date.

I could try again using jparnold's post. This came after your directive.

I set a system restore point before commencing your directive. Should I use that to put things back as they were. What do I do about your insructions at the start re checking/uunchecking folders?

I am still keen to get this working if you can assist further.

The patch I referred For VS10+ and Vista is UVS10_VistaPatch_5n 1.exe

Hello again.
Pleased to say that VS PROX2 is working! Having only just purchased I assumed I did not need the 'patch' which can be found on the Corel Site. Spoke to their Tech support. They said I did need it. Downloaded and installed...hey presto the programme launched :D

Since attempting the clesn upgrade I can see folders that used to be hidden....I think? Should I go back into Windows explorer and reverse the check/uncheck in the view tab.

Also I have some strange new icons on my desktop, almost transluscent...desktop.ini. Can I just delete these? Please advise.

Your help along the way has been much appreciated!

That's where you threw me, it is a Corel/Ulead patch not one from Microsoft.
Yes you can delete desktop.ini

Thanks Steve,

I like to keep my system in good order if I can. So do I need to go back and check/uncheck the boxes that I altered when doing the 'clean upgrade'?

Is there anything else I should do? Is is wise to follow up a free registry scan? When I have done a scan with REGcure it tells me I have hundreds of issues that need to be repaired....and then you have to purchase the product that does the job. Is this a worthwhile course of action. Please advise.

:?: what boxes :?:

Regarding reg cure I use a similar registry cleaner from time to time
Registry Mechanic
However I always advise that you should use caution with ANY automated software for getting rid of what IT considers to be bugs, discrepancies, invalid entries and so on. Sometimes these "tools" are a bit too keen and remove things that shouldn't be removed.

My experience of registry cleaners and in fact any anti virus software is that if you run "Program A" it finds hundreds of 'faults'" so you let the program clean them. Run it again and it reports all is OK.
Then you decide to run "Program B" and that magically finds another hundred or so. In fact you can keep doing this ad infinitum with different "healing programs" each finding something all the others didn't!

Unless you have a specific reason (peace of mind does not count) then these cleaners are best left alone. If you do use one make sure you have a back up/restore plan.

Thanks Steve,

I think I will stay away from the registry cleaning tools!

The 'boxes' i referred to were those that I had to 'check' or 'un-check' when I attempted to do the 'Clean upgrade' that you advised on the 25th October. You referred me to a document entitled 'Re-installation of Software products.' I printed this out to follow it through.

It instructed me to check, un-check boxes in Windows Explorer, folder and search options, view tab. .....starting with 'Check-show hidden files and folders'.

As I said, I now have some 'unfamiliar' files that appear with the usual ones. Also, when I attept to go into some folders...such as My Pictures, access is denied. I can still get acces by the most direct route.

I hope this makes sense, and that you can advise on how to 'normalise' the situation.

Many thanks!
