Now I understand that the problem is the Preview is not working. Have you downloaded and installed the DirectX patch from the sticky at the top of this forum. That needs to be loaded manully, download the Zip file, Extract all etc. I think that should cure the problem (fingers and everything else crossed)
Here's the link to the sticky:

Thank you so much for all your prompt replies. Loading the DirectX patch has fixed the problem. I am extremely grateful to you for all your help.
What I find odd, is that having downloaded and paid for an upgrade to VideoStudio Pro X2 only 10 days ago, it turns out that it needs 3 patches to get it to work. You have very helpfully pointed me in the right direction but did I miss something when I upgraded? I would have expected some notification or warning telling me that I needed these patches but, I don't recall seeing any.
How many other patches may I require to fix problems that I have not yet encountered?
It all seems very odd to me and quite unlike any other program I have on my PC. I would have imagined the User to User Web Board would be a place for people to find out how to do things to a working program not a place where users have to go to be told how to fix problems unrelated to anything done by them but rather to fix defects in the program as supplied by Corel.

Hi Mark
Thanks for the feedback and am delighted to hear that it worked. As far as the update is concerned. To be fair the need to update the Directx is a Windows problem really nothing to do with VS. I have a dedicated PC that is for Video and Still image editing only. It is not connected to the internet and has never had Windows updates installed. I do not need to update the Direct x so the theory is that you only need to update the Direct X after some other update has been installed on your PC. I guess your system automatically updates Windows as and when the updates are available. So we should not blame VS for this.

Regarding having to install update patches after you have just bought an upgrade version, I don't think that is a particular Corel problem either -- I have had it with quite a few other programs I had recently bought and installed, including a number of Adobe programs. It seems to me that it is only programs which are very regularly updated, like the Nero suite, sell the very latest version with all updates already included in them. I suspect Corel may feel that it may not be cost effective to bring out a totally new version just for one or two upgrades over the course of more than a year (since X2 was first released), particularly when one of them only relates to Windows 7 users...
I am not making excuses for them, and would certainly agree that there should be some sort of warning on their website -- apart from the not so obvious link to the updates themselves! -- warning of the necessity to install the patches.
As for the function of this Board, I would hasten to note that none of the team who 'work' here, including me and my other Administrator colleagues, is an employee of Corel. We are users, just like you, who volunteer their time to help out with problems. We have little direct contact with Corel, and more often than not, receive no helpful response from them, as many other users have found!
In fact, that *is* one of the main purposes of any web board: to help fix problems that are inherent in the program itself, as well as, of course, to help users through the intricacies of features that *are* there and work...

I think it is amazing what you and John Mitchell do and I hope neither of you thought for one moment I was directing any criticism in your direction. I am just so grateful for your sorting out my problem. I posted my comment in the faint hope that someone at Corel would see it and take notice.
I must say that most programs that I have on my PC include at least the option to check for updates from within the program and lots of them offer the opportunity to download updates when you start the program up.
Corel should not have to rely on people like you and John sort out problems inherent in the way they set up and sell their programs. I am not suggesting the Corel should bring out a totally new version for a few upgrades - just that they should flag up in a very clear way the fact that the program or upgrade you are buying will not work properly unless you install the upgrades.

There is...sort of. If you click on the "?" at the top right of the VS screen you will see "Product Updates on the Web". Unfortunately it takes you to the page on Corel.com where you can buy VS. However, the Support tab is right there on that page and hovering on it you will find "Patches and Updates".And I agree totally that there should be an update option within the program
