I'm having the same problem.
I'm using Video Studio 11, all of my clips are edited and are MPEG, a couple of WMV and a couple of AVI. I'm making a NTSC DVD MPEG2 720 x 480 24 bit 4:3.
I can burn a MPEG to my HD and I burned a Disc with the same settings but if I try to put in auto chapters in crashes. I tried to set them at 2 minutes because each clip is about 1:45 long.
Any suggestions?

Where do you people learn all of this from? Thanks for all of your help and I'm posting a few more questions. I did search for this topic and this is all I found.

First let's clarify your workflow. Are you jumping straight into the burn module (Share>Create Disc ) or are you first creating a DVD Compliant MPEG-2 video file (Share Create Video File) then clearing your timeline by clicking File>New Project or just removing everything, then opening the burn module?

It would be better if you first converted everything to the same format needed for burning DVDs, which would be NTSC DVD (MPEG-2). This is done in the final step of the editor, Share>Create Video File. The reasoning for this, in the burn module VS will need to convert everything to DVD Compliant MPEG-2 prior to burning anyway. Now add to this task, building any menus, adding chapters, ect... and it can cause VS to crash.

In the burn module, insert your newly created DVD Compliant MPEG-2 video file(s). Then proceed to build your menus and add chapters. One thing you need to do, is click the gear looking icon (Project Settings) and make sure the box is checked beside Do not convert compliant MPEG files and beside Treat MPEG audio as non-compliant. At the bottom you'll set how you want to navigate your DVD.

You might also check the Preferences for the burn module, it is separate to the Editor. So you don't get any flickering on your menus, check the Apply anti-flicker filter.

Now try adding your chapters. If VS still crashes, it could be it's having a problem with one of the video file formats you're using. For example you mentioned that you are using WMV and avi. What flavor of avi? There are about 800 different video codecs that can be contained in the AVI wrapper. Some like DivX, and Xvid tend to be more difficult for VS to handle. You could use a free conversion utility, like Super, by erightsoft, to convert them to MPEG-2.

Finally you might try to manually add your chapters. This might get you past adding the chapters, and to burning your DVD. One last quick note, try Creating DVD Folders, before you actually burn to a DVD. This is done by unchecking the box Create Disc, and checking Create DVD Folders in the final step of the burn module. That way using your favorite DVD player on your PC, you can view it for any faults before committing it to disc.

Thanks. You said it might be one of the formats I'm using. Would that be a problem even after I save it as an MPEG2 and then load that to do auto chapters? Because I did that and it still crashes. I also applied all of the things you suggested. It's not really that big of a deal that I have chapters on this but I was trying to do "more" with this project just to try.

When is the last time you updated DirectX ? This must manually downloaded and installed.

Sticky for DirectX Update.

How many titles do you have in your project? Remember each title is a separate video clip. If you have more than one title, have you tried to auto-add chapters on the others? If you can, this would indicate a possible corruption/problem with the one you're having the problem with..

Adding chapters to DVD

Post by Mark Fletcher »

I have a Sony Vaio running Windows 7 with the following spec.

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 / 2.53 GHz ( Dual-Core )
Cache Memory: 3 MB - L2 Cache
RAM: 4 GB (installed) / 8 GB (max) - DDR2 SDRAM - 800 MHz ( 2 x 2 GB )
Hard Drive: 500 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 5400 rpm

Ten days ago I upgraded from VideoStudio 11 (which I had installed on my new PC) to VideoStudio Pro X2. Using Pro X2 I have created a new project from which I want to make a DVD.

When I go to Share then Create Disk and then to Add/Edit Chapter, the "Add Chapter" option is greyed out.

At the top of the box it says "Drag the Jog Bar and click Add Chapter (if a suitable frame shows). But on my screen there is no Jog Bar visible. The preview screen is blank and the slot where I would expect the Jog Bar to be is empty.

As I can't add the chapters manually because there is no Jog Bar visible, I have tried clicking on Auto Add Chapters. I have done this several times but each time I get the message "Corel VideoStudio has stopped working" and I have to quit the program and restart.

I thought this might have something to do with my Project Properties so I created another simple Project with file format Microsof AVI files and PAL (25fps). There are five clips in this Project and the are all in AVI format. There are no titles or other tracks. But when I try to create chapters I get exactly the same problem.

Incidentally on my previous PC using Windows XP I created chapters for my DVDs using VideoStudio 11 without any problem.

What should I do?

I have downloaded the patches but the problem remains even after re-booting.

The problem also remains even if I create an entirely new project, insert a video clip in it and go straight to creating the DVD. So it does not seem to be related in any way to the previously created projects.

The only change I have noticed following the inistallation of the patches is that there are now three buttons across the bottom of the create DVD window (as there were with VideoStudio 11). Before I downloaded the patches there was just the Settings and Options button. Now there are a Project settings button and a Change the display aspect ratio button as well

When you get to the Add/Edit Chapter screen have you got a thumbnail of your clip at the bottom left and the above that clip the words "Total chapters 1"? Also if you press the Play button on the preview window navigation what happens? To the left of the Preview window under "Currently selected clip:" What does it say?
