Same video: 1+GB (wmv), or 4-KB (mpg) - why?

Same video: 1+GB (wmv), or 4-KB (mpg) - why?

I finished the third video using VS Pro X2. This one is 9 min-24 sec in duration. (O-Gauge trains again.)

Initially, I created the video file as I thought I had done once before, using ¡§WMV HD 720 30P¡¨ and the resulting file was 1018231 KB. This file took several hours to upload to YouTube, and the first time I tired to play it from videos on my account, it was awful; low resolution and jerky. I searched for it on YouTube, but it was not available.

I did not like this, so I created another video file (same VS source project), this time using ¡§NTSC MPG2 (720x480 29.97 fps)¡¨ and the resulting file was ¡¥mere¡¦ 393201 KB! I uploaded it to YouTube under a slightly different file name, and of course, it went really fast, comparatively speaking.

I was not able to look at YouTube until three hours later, but when I finally did I discovered that both videos were available. The long video was now available in HD, but it was jerky and did not download smoothly. Replaying after the initial download it had no effect; it was still jerky.

On the other hand, the newer and KB-wise shorter video (the duration was the same; i.e., 9m24s) loaded smoothly and played back fine.

I guess there are several lessons here, one of which, of course, is not to create the videos in WMV. But other than that, I would like for someone who knows more than I do explain why the videos were so different in file size and why YouTube appeared to process them so differently.

One guess is that YouTube compresses the files, and perhaps the larger file was subjected to more compression and hence did not playback as well. But I have no basis to opine this.

Thanks for your comments!

Alex

I remember your previous videos! That train set up you have is absolutely amazing and your videos are as equally amazing.

When you upload a video to an on line service such as
YouTube
VEOH
Google Video
and many more similar sites, you need to check the individual sites recommendations for uploading videos. Some sites prefer "this" format whilst other sites prefer "that" format.

I think most (if not all) of these sites will convert your video into "their" chosen video format, and so if it already happens to be in "their" format it would be akin to smart rendering with VideoStudio.

With all of these sites there is a delay between uploading a video and the video becoming available. This is no doubt due to their site checking and if necessary converting the uploaded video.
