Disk space

Post by surfer »

When i want to make a mpg file from several avi's at a certain percentage Videostudio does not go on, lets say by 60% of the project rendering.

In the bottom i see a icon in WindowsXp pro that there is not enought space.
When i look at the message from WIndows i see that it is in: c:\documents and settings\name\localsetting\temp. Then in Videostudio X2 this it the temporary path where video studio puts his temp mpg files.... BUT i have disselect this earlier because i want to use a another temp disk, i want to use K so thats what i have put in. Also on the first page of the properties of Videostudio there is a path connection and this i have also point out to the K drive.

Why is Videostudio still using the C.... drive to put is temporary mpg files? How can i change this, the properties are good but Videostuido X2 doesn't listen i think..

Have you cleared out the temporary files - are you still looking at "the old ones"?

Perhaps you need to run the Windows Disk Cleanup tool.

That are not old temp files because Videostudio is stopping the encoding. There is 200 mb free at that time. Videostudio must not look at the free space of see however al the settings pointing to K.

First, if that is indeed only 200 Mb free, and VS is indeed using that folder, then 200 Mb these days is absolutely tiny. Depending on your files, you will normally require at least twice as much space as the files you are processing.

I understand you say you think you have changed the working folder. But when you say you are converting the AVI files (what kind are they? DivX or DV or uncompressed), are you selecting Share > Create Video File > DVD (or MPEG-2)? Or are you selecting Share > Create Disc > DVD? If the latter, then there is a second working folder in that same Temp folder which you can find in the first icon on the bottom left of the burning screen...

Or are you talking about some other kind of mpeg e.g. high definition HDV (mpeg-2) or AVCHD (mpeg-4)? They are also very large...

I know 200 mb is not much but there is usual 6 gb free and this is enough for me on C. I have many partitions and one of them is the K drive which is 200 gb free. So thats why i have set Videostudio to store the temp and example files there and the actual video on my external drive which has enough space,
The source video's are xvid and divx avi files and als mpg2 files.
I make one video out of it and choose : share - create file - dvd- PAL so that he makes a mpeg2 file which i can play on my Asus o!play media player.
I have checked the settings in Videostudio and he must use K for the temp. But tried to ake the mpeg file again and again he gets stuck and Windows is reporting not enough spave while before the encoding there was 6 gb free on c so Videostudio keeps storing the mpegs on c. There or some mpegs on c but why is he doiing that...

Another question is rising: when i make a mpg file for lets say: 5gb how big is the space requred for the temp files? When i can't tell Video where to store the temp files then i must make the space for it to store the temp files. But 5gb free space is not enough for a 5 gb file (it seems).

Maybe i miss a setting but i don't believe so..

You would need at least 10 gig free space for VS to work with a 5 gig file. The general rule of thumb is as Ken advised, you need double the file size in free space.

I do my video editing on an XP machine, that has 2 internal HDD, totaling 550 gig. I've always set my working folder, and preview folders on the secondary hard drive, and never had a problem with VS not using them. I also uncheck the "C" drive default, and in the drop-down menu, change that to the hard drive I have selected for my working folders.

And just to repeat, there are TWO places which set the C:\ drive as the default Temp working area -- in the File > Preferences for the Editing module, but also in the first icon in the bottom left of the Burning module. And you have to change BOTH. Changing only one does NOT change the other one.

I do not burn the mpg so only the preferencs is using the temp, i cannot understand why he does use the c drive.

Why not simply change ALL of your temporary files to your other hard drive.

I have tweak ui running but don't see the option to alter the temp files location. There is a list of default folders to alter but not the temp folders.. using version 2.10 for Windowsxp pro.

Ah I thought (from memory) it was one of the special folders that you can 'move' with TweakUI.

However... it can still be moved as follows:
right-click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced tab > Environment variables. Highlight the "temp" variable, click Edit, and enter the new location in the Variable Value field
