rendering

Post by classicwest »

I have MFP7. I have edited a movie in Canopus and rendered it to MPG2, I bring the movie into MFP7 and render it again to MPG2. Does this compress the movie further?
I do it this way as if I don't render it again in MFP7, the slow motion on my footage becomes jurky

Mpeg is a lossy format, so each time you save it and render it it will use the mpeg compression algorithm and you will lose quality.
Which Canopus programme have you used? Edius?
What were your output settings?
What are your MF project settings?

Make sure you are using the same settings in MF as you output in Canopus.

I can't think of a reason why just the slow motion should become jerky.

If you play the canopus made mpeg2 in your dvd playing software, is it jerky in the same place?
If yes, you have a problem in canopus, if no, then it is most likely the MF settings.

Hi Graham. I use Let's Edit 2, a great easy program by Canopus.
I save my footage to MPEG 2, program stream at approx 70,0000 Picture 30 iBBP ticked and save it
If I use this programs own rendering there is no jerking. If I use MF 3.5 there is also no jerking.
When I use MFP7 and don't render it again, there is jerking throughout the movie, but only where there is slow mo, it is like a freeze frame every few seconds, but as I said, only whilst there is slow mo.

If I render in MFP7 as well as in Let's Edit there is no jerking, but of course the movie is slightly lower in quality in playback. I have had this same problem since I first bought MFP7. I do a fair bit of slow mo work in a movie.
Thanks Allan

Yep, I know it, but we need your full output settings, so is it upper or lower field first, or frame based/progressive etc.
Also the project settings from MF.

Render

Hi Graham
Edit program settings are:
Stream : MPEG2 Program Stream
[Video Settings]
Bit rate : CBR, 7700000 bps
GOP Settings : IBBP, Picture = 30
Profile && Level : MP@ML, Size : FULL ( 720 x 576 )

ticked is. Encoding Mode : Quality the Most
Sequence Header : Place all GOP's

MFP7 settings: 16:9 lower fields first DV
That's all the settings. I can't see anything wrong with these settings.
Thanks Allan

In addition to the problems of loss of quality when you save an MPEG and then Save that MPEG and then Save that MPEG etc. You have introduced a further factor into the equation.

Your "lets Edit by Canopus" program appears to use a different IBP structure to MovieFactory 7"

What can I do? As I have written MF3.5 is compatable, but it is old technology and not good enough in other areas?
Is there a solution? Is it possible to make the movie reder it to AVI thenrender to MPG2 in MFP7, I have tried it but does not seem to work?

Point 1. Stick to one editing program - they behave differently as you can see just by looking at the GOP structure - and that is on top of the deterioration caused by re-saving a MPEG2 file which is a lossy format.

Point 2. There is no point in rendering from MPEG2 to AVI then back again.
Firstly you cannot put back what has already been taken out. whilst there is no loss going from MPEG2 to AVI. there will be loss when you later convert the AVI back to MPEG2.

Whilst the following was written for VideoStudio - the principles apply just as equally to MovieFactory.

That's OK, but I still haven't solved the problem.
I am sticking to the same editing program and that works well.
MFP7 is causing the footage in slow mo to jerk. This is the issue I need to work out. On how to stop MFP7 doing this without me having to render it again in MFP7 because I don't want to render it twice.

Is there a solution that you know of.

Why have you got your MF7 settings set to dv?
Surely you want them the same as your output settings for lets edit.

It is set to Lower fields. What should it be set to?
No Fields
Lower fields first DV
Upper fields first
Which one.?

Well mpeg, as that's what youa re working with, not dv.
Procoder defaults to upper field first for mpeg, so I assume lets edit will as well. You'd need to check.
