Here are my findings.

I took the exact same file that was imported off of the DVD into VideoStudio and brought it into NeroVision 4. I set the NeroVision 4 settings to match the bitrate viewer information and used NeroVision 4 to split and remove the commercials.

I then click export to export the file as a new edited MPEG file and set those settings to match the bitrate viewer settings. The file was saved in under 7 minutes and was reduced to about 3.5GB which is what I would have expected.

My conclusion... VideoStudio SmartRender may not be a smart as NeroVision 4 SmartEncode.

Go Figure....

Thanks everyone for your help but it looks like for now these files will need to be edited within NeroVision. Disappointing but I'm glad I still own Nero as well as VideoStudio.

Don't fall into the trap of looking for an "All in one" Video Editing Solution.
When you own more than one piece of software connected to video editing - use the best of what's available.

My Camcorder captures are done with MediaStudio 8
My TV card captures are done with WinTV2000
My DV (Camcorder) video Editing is done with either VideoStudio or MediaStudio dependant upon the complexity of the project.
Sometimes I will even use both of those programs during one project.
My Analogue (TV Card) editing is done with Womble.
My DVD authoring is done partly with PhotoImpact and partly with DVD Workshop.
My Audio Editing is done with Audacity.
My DVD burning is done mostly with "CopyToDVD"

Don't try and stick rigidly to one software product - I have yet to find an All in One solution.
