install problems: ulMDMgr.dll not registered

Post by cmoulikus »

Hi
I purchased my retail version of VS X2 Pro yetserday. While installing it I got the message: unable to register ulMDMgr.dll I cancelled the installation, did a complete uninstall of X2 using Windows Add/remove programs, rebooted and re-tried installing but same message appears.

I also tried manually registering the dll as someone had suggested in this forum but to no avail. I have ignored the message and the rest of installation appears to go through smotthly but am worried about problems later.

Can someone please help with this and let me know what I need to do?
I am running on Windows XP SP3 with 1GB RAM and an Intel 2.7GHz CPU

thank you
Chandra

Please search your computer to see how many copies of ulMDMgr.dll you have and their version numbers.

Image

The one that counts is the one in
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\MPEG

Next check your Windows Security Tab to make sure you have necessary permissions and alter them if necessary
Image

Now run the following

Image

regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\MPEG\ulMDMgr.dll"

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
1) I searched and have two versions: a) C:Program Files\Common Files\UleadSystems\MPEG. The version is 1.0.0.17
b) C:Program Files\Corel\VS-Installation files\Data1.cab

2) I have the right permissions for a)

3) I did the regsvr32 using the full path name for a). I get the following error message:

DllRegisterServer in C:PrgramFile\....\ulMDMgr.dll failed. Return code was: 0x8007007e

Any idea what is going on?
thanks

Next thing to try then is to start the computer in a clean boot environment and then try to register the dll again.

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state

Dear Steve
Thanks for all your help. Unfortunately, the problem still persists.
I booted in the clean boot state as described in the MS KB.
I got the same error when I tried to manually resgister.
I then tried starting in Safe mode and same error came up when registering the dll.

Just for curiosity I tried unregister by giving the /u option and that succeeded but when I tried with /i it failed with the error mesage I described earlier.

At this point I have following questions:
1) Is the dll on my install DVD corrupted and if so can I download a clean dll from Corel?
2) I tied ignoring the error while installing and the install went through. So what is the purpose of this dll? Will I run into problems later while editig videos?
3) Before purchasing, I downloaded a trial version of VS x2 and that it installed without problems. Is it possible for Corel to honor my purchase and allow me to install it directly from their website?
4) Any other options? It is really frustrating after paying all this money.

thanks

Please download the following from my Sky Drive account:
ulMDMgr.zip

If this file still does not register then try the following:

1. Download the following file from Microsoft:
SubInACL.exe

2. Create a file called reset.cmd with Notepad. Copy the text below into the file reset.cmd and run reset.cmd with administrative rights (it may take a LONG time):

cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %windir%*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

3. When it has finished try registering the ulMDMgr.dll again.

Hi Steve

Unfortunately, both options did not work.javascript:emoticon(':(')
1) I downloaded the ulMDMgr.dll from the link you sent me. It was the same size and version as I had. Nevertheless I overwrote what I had with what I just downloaded and tried manual registering but same error showed up.

2) Next, I went to the MS utility subinacl.exe and copy pasted the cmds you sent me to a reset.cmd file and executed it as an Administrator. It took a while and I noticed some fails as it was running but it was too fast for me to know what (about 15 failed). After it finished I tried manual registering the dll and again same error. Just for fun I tried registering some other dll from the same MPEG directory and that registered fine !

So
1) Is there a log file that is generated when reset.cmd is executed in 2) above that I can send you? Note that registering other dll works
2) any other options?

Thanks a bunch for your help. Appreciate it.

Do you by chance have any other Ulead/Corel programs installed, like an earlier version of VS, or DVDMF, MSP?

This DLL file is located in the common files folder, and if you have other Ulead or Corel digital media programs installed, the files in this common files folder will not be uninstalled. I've had problems with a file in that folder, and was able to correct it by renaming the MPEG folder, moving it to some other place on my system, or just deleting it. Then reinstalled VS, which creates a new MPEG folder with all those files.

Vidoman

I had a trial version of VS x2 which I uninstalled, deleted the Corel and Ulead Systems directory in Common Files and the re-installed the retail version of VS x2 that I purchased.
When this problem appeared I again uninstalled, deleted the the Ulead Systems directory as well as Corel directory and re-installed but same problem persists.

I was hoping that the MS utility subinacl.exe would fix it, what I strongly suspect is that it is Windows Security Permission preventing access.
As well as having permissions on the files/folders in Windows Explorer, the same applies to the various trees/branches in the Windows Registry.

Try opening REGEDIT and then doing a search for ulMDMgr - check the security settings anything it finds.

In Regedit, click the key with the ACL you want to edit.
On the Edit menu, click Permissions

Steve
I searched in registry for ulMDMgr in regedit and made sure all permissions were ok (and they were). I tried manual registration again and it failed with the same error message.
I don't know what else to do.
thanks

Next thing I would check is the windows Error Log.
If that doesn't help then use the Windows System Files checker.

Steve
Thanks for your patience.

I checked the windows error log. Here is what I found:
Product: VideoStudio -- Error 1904.Module C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\MPEG\ulMDMgr.dll failed to register. HRESULT -2147024770. Contact your support personnel.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Next I tried the WSF checker. It cleaned some files. I tried registering the dll after it finished but I still get the error message. I uninstalled VSX2 and re-installed and still the dll fails to register.

1) What is the purpose of this dll and will I be able to use VS? Rest of installation appears to go through.
2) Short of formatting my hard drive, re-installing XP and then installing VS, what else can I do?

This DLL file is apparently required for VS to run without problems. To confirm this, I renamed the file so VS would not see it, and proceeded to run VS Pro. Upon launching an install dialog appeared, stating that Ulead/Corel Direct to Disc Recorder is being installed. I canceled out of that and continued on with VS. While I was able to create a video file, VS crashed, and also at the start of creating the video file, I was again presented with the install dialog.

What is Direct to Disc Recorder?
With DVD DiscRecorder, users can capture, edit, and save videos in the DVD-VR format or convert these videos to the DVD-Video format for use with DVD-RW or DVD-RAM.
DVD-VR (Video Recording) is a widely accepted video recording format often used with hardware devices such as DVD camcorders or set-top DVD recorders. It was created by the DVD Forum to bring the familiar functionality of VCRs to video editing.

The ulMDMgr.dll file is an application extension file, it is proprietary to Corel, and has something to do with MetaData.

This is grasping at straws here, but since I received that prompt, I'm wondering if it has some connection to DVD burning. Do you have any other DVD recording, authoring software installed, that may have a type of Drag-n-drop utility, where the DVD is treated like a hard drive? Corel does have one of it's own, that is part of the DVD MovieFactory program, however is not part of VS.

Have you ran a virus, spyware check on your system recently? There may be something that is blocking this file from being correctly installed/registered.

You might have to start from scratch, reformat and re-install everything. I just done this about 2 weeks ago to my XP machine. It took about 2 months to convince myself to do so. However once done, I'm glad I did, as my PC is much much faster. I went to the extent to make it a dedicated video/graphics system. No Internet, and all the bloat that is needed for that...

I'm grasping at straws here but I am pretty sure that .cab files are deleted after installation. Usually automatically as part of temp file clean-ups at the end of installation procedures.

To me, it seem to indicate an untidy installation or an incomplete one if .cab files have remained.

Just to eliminate one thing I always check with installing from discs any scratches, fingerprint marks, specks of dust etc. I could very well be a faulty disc
