Post by hanskru »

Hi VS friends,

I suddenly cannot capture my video as I get the following error message:
Cannot start the capture graph.
What can be wrong suddenly as I checked all my settings and I did not change anything.

Please advise Hans

Well Hans, it would certainly help if we knew what you were trying to capture, from what and how... Come on, you've been on the Board long enough to know we need far more information than what you have provided!

Dear Ken,

ofcourse I am trying as usual to capture a video from my Sharp cam recorder as I have done so many times before.
However this time I get this error message.
I tried in AVI format, mpeg2 format, but with the same error message.

I have captured now thru WWindows Movie maker without a problem, so the problem is with VS.

I hope that you have a suggestion Hans :?

That still does not tell us what "Sharp cam recorder" you are using and how you have it connected (firewire, USB, etc.). That you were successful in the past is irrelevant if we don't know how you were doing it in the past.

Also, just because it worked in the past does not mean it is the fault of VS. Something with you system obviously changed. Have you added or removed any software or hardware? Have any updates for any software/hardware been applied?

Hi Jeff,

in my profile y :) ou can see my PC system and type of Cam recorder.
I did not change anything, nor hardware or software.
No updates except for the regular windows SW updates to keep my system up to the right safety levels.

You previously state a Sharp cam, but in your system info it says Sony. And you still haven't told us how it is connected.

I give up.

...And there is a fairly widespread, and probably well-founded, belief that at least some of those Windows regular updates upset other aspects of the operating system, including the operation of DirectX. So it is usually an idea to regularly update your Direct X (see post at the top of this Board for the latest update).

Note that DirectX is NOT part of the regularly, automatic Windows updates. You have to manually update it yourself.

It has been known to correct a number of problems that VS appears to encounter as a result of the regular Windows updates...

Which reminds me to ask: I see you have XP, but I assume you have at least SP2 for that. I believe there was a problem with the firewire code in an earlier version of XP which was corrected by the Service Packs.

Hi Hans

I notice that you own most versions of VS from 5.0 upwards.

I assume that the problem is when using VS 12 (X2)
In the past, have you ever been successful in capturing using VS 12?

Are you able to capture successfully using VS 10?

Can you also clarify that you are trying to capture from a DV tape in the camera, or are you using it as a pass-through device from an analogue source? If the latter, then capture has not worked via firewire/IEEE 1394 since 10. Corel in its wisdom changed the code with VS 11 and it has not worked in pass-through thereafter. So most of us here in that situation use a small, excellent freeware program called WinDV... Does the capture job excellently, as that is all it does (apart from export finished, edited DV back to camera). In fact, it also captures DV excellently... so give it a go. But if it does not work, then something else is wrong with your set-up.

Cannot start capture graph

Post by hanskru »

Hi Ken and Trevor,

I did at least 15 videos capturing with VS12 without problems.
Now I also want to capture a DV in my Sharp VL-Z5 and suddenly I got this error message.
In the capture mode, in the Information area the right data is displayed so VS12 recognizes my Sharp recorder and the corresponding DV or DVD format.

I am able thru VS10 to capture my DV tape and also thru Windows movie maker.
I also updated my system with the latest DirectX version, but still the same error message: Cannot start the capture graph.

So I assume that I have to unistall end install again VS12??

Please advise and thanks for all your replies Hans

I am able thru VS10 to capture my DV tape and also thru Windows movie maker.(At least you can capture to DV, then import to X2)

I also updated my system with the latest DirectX version, but still the same error message( just to clarify, this is a three part process, 1/ download file, 2 / Run file to extract contents to a new folder, 3 / install the extracted files by double clicking the SETUP file)

So I assume that I have to unistall end install again VS12?? ( Yes you may have to do a Clean Install)Please advise and thanks for all your replies Hans
By the way , Have you installed the Update Patch from Corel for X2??

Hi Trevor,

thanks for your prompt reply  .
Apparently I was not clear. I am using my Sharp for the last 4 years, so with VS 9, 10 and 12. It worked all these times, no capture problems.

I did the fullDirectX update.

Yes indeed I did install the Corel Patch for X2.

So the only step left for me is now to do a clean install.

I will keep you informed about the result,

best rgds Hans

I am able thru VS10 to capture my DV tape
There's your answer then. Capture with VS10, Edit with VSX2.
I do all my captures with MediaStudio Pro 8.

When you find a system that works, don't spend too much time and effort trying to fix another system that doesn't. It doesn't matter what software you use to get the video into your computer for editing - the only important thing is getting it in there.
