Video Studio video fade in/out

Post by cjb121 »

Hi Guys,
My first post, so I would like to ask a general question which I am sure must have cropped up before, but I cannot find in FAQ.

I have just downloaded the trial of Video studio 12. I have also used earlier versions and find the overlay masks very useful. However, I am reduced to frustration at the seemingly incoherent use of transitions. The most basic transition I use on Pinnacle is the video/Title/ fade in/out. Such a simple tool which starts and ends all my clips... so where is it on Ulead/Corel studio ?
The only Fade in is for audio not video ????

Also, I cannot place any transition at the beginning of a clip/title. So I have resorted to making a Black image which I then place at the beginning, followed by a transition.

Is it me?... am I being really stupid here ? where is the video fade in please please please :(

That is the way VS does it, unlike Pinnacle. You insert a colour matte at beginning and end of the project, and insert a cross fade transition in between. There is a separate fade-out (but not fade-in) transition for the end, but you still need a colour matte to follow it.

And you don't have to make your own. If you look in the same drop-down menu that lists the transitions and masks, you will see another category: Color. That gives a number of color mattes, including black.

Thanks Ken, that's what I feared. Is it only myself finds this a bit of a strange affair ? Perhaps some feedback to HQ is required.. I won't be buying Ver 12 .. because of this.
cheers

Well, you probably won't be buying version 13 either, in that case. But that is the way the program has always operated, as I say. Most of us appear to just accept that as our start of operations and get on with it. It's certainly an easy enough operation and takes about 10 seconds to drag a colour clip and then drop in the cross fade. I doubt whether anyone else would refuse to buy the program because of what (I have to say) seems a fairly trivial point... But by all means, approach Corel. (No one on this Board works for them...)

Oh, by the way you don¡¦t have to create your own colour image, there is a colour page in the library.
The X-fade transition is in the ¡¥transition library under F/X.

I usually use my colour clips as a backdrop for my scrolling text prior to my video starting.

Edit
sorry Ken didn't notice your comment on the library.

10 seconds Ken?! I know things slow down when you retire...

I think you can perform that action in 2 seconds.

haha :D yeah, takes about 2-3 seconds for me also. And I have it set to automatclly add the crossfade transition when I overlay the color block

I do know another way to make an image fade to black/white using filters.

Yes there are other ways to do it with filters, but the OP was looking for a simple transition at the beginning of his video. I really don't see the issue he has with it. :?

Hi
I think the main question is whether the OP is using AVCHD material or not!
In case he uses AVCHD then he really should stay away from Videostudio because of the known distortion problem with transtions.

No, the OPs main question was how to fade in a video. Please don't confuse the subject.
