Corrupt file at capture? Why now?

Post by Nando »

I started working on my third video, and I am using the same camera as before, my old Sony DCR-TRV20. I recorded about 12 minutes of video, connected the IEEE1394 cable to it as before, and using VS I started capturing. It everything appeared to be fine as it was displayed on the monitor screen.

When done, I clicked on the [Stop] button control on the VS control panel, and a few seconds later a small window popped up saying that the video file was corrupt and had been erased (or deleted).

I did everything again from the beginning, and again everything appeared to proceed well, until the end - it gave me the same 'corrupt file' message.

I have done this successfully before, and I am now at a loss as to what I am doing different that is wrong.

Any help will be appreciated!

It might be a problem with the tape in the camcorder.
Try capturing with the built in Windows Program "Windows Movie Maker" to see if the fault still occurs.

Windows Movie Maker is one possibility but there is also a small freeware capturing program called WinDV? A lot of us here use it. But if you have difficulty capturing with that as well, then there is something else wrong

Don't rule out the fact that a fault may have aoocured in an item since it was last used, so you may have to look at testing the three main hardware items, cam/cable/pc with 3 others that you know work.

I will try using MovieMaker when I get home tonight and let you know.

What puzzles me is that the video played fine (on the VS capture screen) while it is playing and apparently being captured. At first I thought that maybe I had pulled the wire or turned the camera off too soon, but in subsequent tries I made sure to leave the camera alone and let VS do the controlling.

Back soon...

I tried Movie Maker and it worked fine. So I tried VS12 again, and it worked fine this time as well! I suspect I was using the wrong controls and was simply playing back the video instead of capturing it. Anyway, I am back in business.

How may I skip capturing a portion of the DV tape I am capturing? If I press Stop Capturing, the camera stops as well.

Thanks

Click on the "Play" button and the tape will play. Click on the Capture button and it will capture, click on Stop Capture to stop.

There is a setting in Preferences that will allow the tape to continue to "play" even after clicking Stop Capture.
