Can't burn on X2, stops at menu

Post by jpmorgan49 »

I've searched the forum for this problem, but didn't find it, sorry if there was a response. First off I have VideoStudio X2 on my Desktop and Laptop. My Desktop is running Windows XP and my Laptop Windows Vista. I also want to state that the VF file WILL burn on my Visa computer but not on my XP computer, therefore I know that the VF file is OK and burnable. So on my XP machine, I load my VF file. I choose SHARE, Create Disk, DVD. I un-click create menu and click on next. I either preview or not and then click on Next. This is where it stalls. I get no error, it doesn't lock up, I can continue to click the Next button and it does nothing. Could I have made an update that affected this? I'm stumped. The big surprise is that it works on Vista but not XP!!! Thanks in advance.

First thing I would try is to update your DirectX.

You refer to a "VF" file - what is one of those?
Are you talking about an MPEG2 file or are you talking about a VSP file?

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. When my project was completed instead of burning it directly to a DVD I created a Video File, opened it as a new project and tried burning. The problem is I tried burning the project before creating the file and it still stopped at the same menu. I even tried calling up older projects that I had burned in the past, all had the same results. I believe somehow in the last couple of months I must have corrupted something. It may be easier to just reinstall, as long as that work...

Since it happens with all projects it could be a burner issue. See Steve's DVD Burning / Playback Issues (above).

Try burning to DVD Folders instead of to disc. If it can then maybe it is a burner issue. If not, then probably a VS issue.

I can't get to the point where I can choose DVD or file. I'm stuck at this menu, clicking Next gets me an hour glass for a second, then nothing.

I have checked the burner, I've burned to it from another application.

I had a similar problem some time ago. A DirectX update and a VS reinstall did the trick (not sure which one did it).

Thanks Black Lab. I did the DirectX upgrade last night and it didn't help. I'll try a reinstall tomorrow morning, I just hope it works. I'll report back with the results.

Hmm, seems to me that you actually managed to update the DirectX last night and that did it - still, I'm glad it worked out for you and that you reported back.

In the past, Windows updates seemed to mess up DirectX. I suspect the DirectX updates are not so much improvements to DirectX as fixes for issues arising from those updates. MS could do a better job of making it clear which version you have. To play safe, you can use System Restore to make a restore point periodically, which you can revert to if things go wrong. I prefer to use Norton Ghost to do that, since it doesn't consume resources other than drive space.
