Problem on relinking - compatibility issue - VS10 - VS12

Post by laurentje »

Some months ago my old pc (XP- vs10) died... I bought a new pc (Vista), installed the vs10 version, I bought and installed also vs12.
I copied the backup files (dv-avi, vsp,...) from an externe discs. Now, on the old machine the files where in a map c:\documents and settings\...; on the new PC they are in a map c:\users\...
When I open (in vs12), I think an automatic relink process is executed and all dv-avi on the time line are available. The only problem is a vsp on the timeline (B.VSP) : file not found (but is on the disc - c:\users\... you know). I can not relink this file:I can only skip or cancel and the place on the time line is shown by a black & white rectangle. I can only "delete" this thing from the timeline (no relinking possible).
I did the same procedure in vs10. Gives me also warning but relinking is possible now.
Conclusion 1: I need to verify with my "old" vs10 all vsp-files and look for other vsp-files on the time line, do a relink and save the files
Conclusion 2: I am worried with this issue, new systems are coming up (windows 7), perhaps later vs?, but these soft have problems with old files, so from now on I WILL NEVER USE VSP_FILES ON THE TIME LINE

I am a little confused. A.vsp file is not one which needs relinking. It is merely the project file, which contains no video -- only text telling VS what files are included. You only have to try to open that file in VS and it should tell you that you need to relink all the files named in that .vsp, but the vsp file itself does not need relinking... just opening.

I WILL NEVER USE VSP_FILES ON THE TIME LINE
Sorry but you will, sort of. As Ken explained the VSP is the working file. So even if you import, insert VSP files, or insert MPEG, AVI, MOV, video files, JPEG, PNG, BMP images, a VSP file is being created as you work. It is the working file, a sort of text file full of instructions, not the actual files being used. This is how NLEs (Non-Linear-Editors) work in a non-destructive manner. The material being used is not embedded into the working file, only links to them.

Yes VS allows inserting VSP files, and treats them like video clips, however any clips that are linked to, must still be available to that inserted VSP file.

I must say the vsp files and the avi-files are located in different maps.
When I copied the b.vsp (which is on the time line of a.vsp) to the map of the avi-files and then when opening a.vsp no warning ("Original file "...b.vsp" doesn't exist") is issued. The files are all recognized. :D
So I have to learn to put all files in 1 map from now on?
In the past I split the project in several maps (avi files, vsp files, image files, etc..), it seems this is not the way to go.

and I have to say that VS10 had not this issue (avi-files and vsp-files can be in different maps).
Because the original vsp-files were made with vs10 :?:
