Number of still images in DVD

Post by dave.mcwilliam »

I am trying to create a DVD slideshow using Video Studio X2. There are 1014 slides and when I use File / Insert Media File to Timeline / Insert Image and select all the files I get the error message

"These files cannt be added to this project. These files may be of unknown format, the computer does not have enough memory or the file is copyright protected".

However, if I insert the same files but in smaller groups of about 200 files at a time they do load. Video Studio then continues to run for a long time and when both progress sliders reach (usually) 99% the program stops and the failure is reported by Windows. Looking in the Event Viewer shows

"Faulting application vstudio.exe, version 12.0.0.0, time stamp 0x48490238, faulting module uDVDBurnMgr.dll, version 1.6.9.102, time stamp 0x4715955d, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000894d, process id 0x11bc, application start time 0x01ca36bc464a738f."

Can anyone tell me whether I have hit some hard limit in VS itself or am just doing something wrong?

I don't know of a limit, but then again I don't know of anyone loading 1,000 images. At 5 seconds a piece that would be an 80+ minute slide show. I don't care if you were showing scantily clad women, an 80 minute slide show would put me to sleep! Sorry.

I'm not exactly clear on this part. Do you mean by putting them in 200 at a time you can load the 1,000 images to the timeline? But when you try to render you get the error?

It would also be helpful if you read the following thread and supply the requested info.

Hi Dave

Have you manually updated Direct X---see top of forum for link.
Have you applied the X2 update patch from corel web site.

Using Video studio:-
Have you tried Share Create Video file first.
Using the default DVD-Pal option will allow for 60 minutes of video to a standard disc.
If your project is longer, then you would have to reduce the bit rate to create a smaller size file.
Use the ¡¥custom¡¦ option
Then start a new project, Share Create disc¡XAdd media, choose your video file.

To test if it is a limit on photo's why not try adding your 200, then save it as a dv.avi movie. Do the same until you have 5 short movies.
Make new project, import 5 movies and then save as one new one.
Make dvd.

What size are your photo's?
1014 small files of 250kb each won't be big, 250Mb but if you have a 10 mega pixel camera and your photos are in tiff they could be nearly 60Mb each, trying to import nearly 60GB of data in one go could seriously slow any pc down :)

First, thank's for all the replies. I realise that 1014 slides is an awful lot but it's for a display of old Local Heritage photos for our library. If the situation is that I have to use a smaller number that will be okay but the messages I was getting seemed to indicate that I was running up against some sort of limit, perhaps of buffer space somewhere.
The file sizes are between 0.5 Mb and 1Mb each and the duration is 3 secs each.
However, Skier-Hughes seems to have hit the nail dead on the head. I split the images into five sets of about 200 each and used "Inset Media Files to Timeline" and "Insert Image" and then did "File / Save as" and saved the project. Then I opened a new project and added each of the video files in turn. No problems! Thanks a million.

That makes sense. Glad you got it working.
