Video Studio 8 bad, PITA

Post by robertbaer »

Problems:
1) Input volume setting *always* reset on program start; this is extremely irritating to say the least.
2) Input selection is always being reset to microphone (will not stay to Line); another PITA.
3) Recorded volume very poor, even if a) using mike in, b) mike boost used, ALL volume sliders set to *MAX*.
Please help.
4) Recording format also reset!
Just too many damn "in your face" problems, not to mention *NO* support from Corel.

** What is really "nice" is that Corel just does not support what they sell.
I have had that problem with every one of their products that have what i consider nasty bugs - bugs that should not have existed in the first place.

They don't support it because v8 is about 5 years old. It might be worth your while to download the trial version of X2 and see if that works better for you.

Moreover, VS8 was produced by Ulead, not Corel And while Corel took over Ulead after it had been taken over by InterVideo, and the Ulead staff mostly absorbed, since then, as we understand it, most of the old Ulead hands have been dispensed with. So any surviving technical expertise there with this old program has long gone. X2 is the first authentically Corel version of the product, and is a complete re-write of the code, we believe -- another reason why the current Corel tech team know little about an 'old code' program...

I am not making excuses for them -- just giving you our understanding of the situation. None of us here work for Corel...

I don't think this one has anything to do with Video Studio. It's probably a limitation of your microphone/soundcard/driver. Have you tried any other programs?

I won't defend Corel, but most audio/video programs seem to have their quirks. It's a question of finding the program that works best for you, or one (or more) that you can "live with". Video Studio is not a perfect tool, but it's a tool that most of us here have found useful. (There have been improvements and many new features added since VS8, but I don't use Video Studio for audio recording and I don't know if those particular issues have been improved.)

Personally, there is no one-program that does everything I need so I have a handful of audio & video programs & utilities. (I haven't actually tried any of the $500+ video editors.)

Since most of your issues are audio related, perhaps you can use a separate audio editor? (i.e. If the audio doesn't need to be tightly synchronized with the video.) Overall, audio editing programs tend to be more "stable" than video editors.

Some popular audio editors are:
Audacity (FREE!!!!)
GoldWave* ($50 USD)
Sony SoundForge ($55 - $400 USD)
Adobe Audition ($350 USD).

* I'm a long-time GoldWave user. It's a rock-solid program with great support directly from the program developer, and free upgrades. (It doesn't do "everything" either, and I frequently use other audio utilities along with it.)

No time to think.
It's like the whole world's

Where do i start?
**
First, audio levels out of tuners, VCRs and DVD players are LINE LEVEL and any programmer *forcing* microphone usage is not only a total idiot and should be hung by the big toes for 10 daze.
Secondly, messing with sensitivities so that there is no observable level difference between line in and +20dB mike in is a total barf.
Under normal circumstances, these inputs work as expected.
**
Blithely saying "use X2" is like setting a bomb which has been carefully crafted by Micro$uck for maximum destructo.
To do that, one must start from scratch, format a new HD, install XP (hopefully NOT that newer POG), waste time jumping hoops for "authorization", "registration", and whatever-all useless because i use BACKUP in the form of true COPY of the working HD meaning all of that is invalid for the LEGAL COPY, then waste two days installing the dozens of workhorse programs i need, and then trying this "X2" which likely is worse (and definitely NOT supported, as Corel does NOT support anything).
**
Oh...you think that Corel supports software?
Well, i was foolish to buy their WordPerfect Office X3 when it came out, to use QuattroPro.
What a pile of junk; it was worse than the original DOS version meaning worse than any other spreadsheet charting software.
Copy a chart?
What does "copy" mean?
Certainly Corel did not use the dictionary.
NO support, period.
Had to toss it and get M$ Office 2003 for Excel.
**
So,what program should i use to record incoming videos (WITH sound) ?

Hi, Robert

I'm afraid I understand very little of what you've written. You clearly understand the technology at a much deeper level than I do (or probably ever will).

I can only tell you that the three guys who have replied to your posting so far are amongst the best you're going to find in this forum. I have found the incredibly patient and helpful.

Take it easy!

btw I did not have to reformat my hard drive when I loaded new versions of VideoStudio. But then maybe I'm missing something?

Hi Robert

Video Studio 8 has a few patch¡¦s to fix various problems -----------have you installed the updates.
http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 7911963266

The link on this window downloads a pdf where there is further links to the various updates.

I do not know if this will cure your audio problem.

I have never used the ¡¥recording¡¦ option from VS, always used a third party program to record then import to VS.

Oh by the way , what are you trying to record?

The Record Option is assuming you are doing a ¡¥voice over¡¦ and as such will select the Mic¡¦ as the input option.

If you have an audio file on the pc, simply import the file to the library or timeline.

I think you need to calm down, have a cup of tea and start again, by describing the problem you have and what you are trying to achieve and how.

If it's solely the fact that the inputs default to ones you don't want them to, then I'm afraid nobody here can help, it's a question of setting the input to the one you want when you want it.

If you are experiencing audio problems after making your choice of settings, then tell us what you have connected, by what means, and the settings you have chosen and we'll see if we can help.

I understand that VideoStudio "X2" demands XP or "better", and since i use Win2K and dislike having to go thru the longwinded HD procedure previously mentioned, then they are "out".
That reference to the Ulead upgrade info is interesting but does not appear to be useful, as the one that pretends to fix some audio problems (patch supposedly remembers settings) is too big to download with dial-up.
The tab title is "Capture" which as far as i am concerned is "recording"; when all of the items are manually *set* properly, then one can record an incoming video with its audio.
It is the total disregard to user settings / needs that is completely unreasonable and i think that a "user" (ie someone that would really like to *USE* it without hassle) has a right and duty to complain as loud as possible until real fixes are given,
I would like to capture segments of a program, each segment into a file without having to jump umpteen hoops - so many that one or two (possibly critical) hoops can get forgotten.
So, is there any *other* program that can recognize that video card that can be used (in a sane manner)?
On my older computer, i had a Radeon AIW video board (with tuner) and the software allowed capture like i want - with ZERO hassles.
The software also allowed me to use the computer as a TV for watching incoming videos (or TV programs).

Have you tried the Control Panel to set your audio properties?
I had the same problem you had until I used the Control Panel and set up all the parameters using the options in it.

Well please do us a favor and don't complain here, as we are users like yourself. Corel employees rarely visit this forum and your complaints will not be heard by those that can "fix" your "problems".
