Aspect Ratio changes when saving or burning an HD file using

Post by trackfactory »

Hi, I'm new to this forum. Searched the previous posts to see if anyone else is having this issue.

My problem is, using VS12 I have a project with a wmv motion background on the main track, and an overlay video on the overlay track. The video on the overlay track was shot on a Sony HDR-FX1 in 720 HD. The motion background is in SD wmv format.

When I go to create a disk in any HD format, or try to save to a fvideo file in HD format, the motion background aspect ration shrinks. IT becomes noticably smaller than the original and the final projects looks funny with a background with large black boarders on the sides and the top and bottom. I have tried to save in just about every HD format available in VS12, and I've tried to tweek the settings in the preferences menu.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Welcome to the forums,

First I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to HD (AVCHD, HDV) video. So I'm going to approach this logically....

The frame sizes for HD and SD are very different. If you are wanting to create an HD or BD disc, and you have SD video in your project, VS will have to enlarge the SD material to meet the HD settings. This will cause distortion and pixelation. You could however downgrade your HD to SD, and have no problems, since reducing the sizes of the HD would not degrade the quality beyond that of your SD settings.

Next the bitrates are also different. Again the upscaling would pose a problem with your SD material. SD DVD video bitrates are no greater than about 10000 kps including the audio. However HD can be anywhere from 15 to I think around 25mbs, depending on the format.

So since your background is SD and it is in an HD project, which is wide-screen 16:9 (or greater) ratio, it is going to be stretched and /or squished to fit the frame size of your HD project.

What you may have to due is find a suitable clip that matches your HD project, or use a still image that is a high-resolution and the correct ratio. If you're wanting to use a video clip as your background, how about creating one. Take your camcorder and get some establishing shots, or just something that fits in with your subject matter. That's what the pros do all the time, or they just purchase some footage. The latter can be a little pricey. Just Google for Royality free video. If you have a digital still camera, shoot some photos and drop them in.

Thanks for the reply. I thought I would probably have to purchase some hd motion backgrounds, but I thought I might be able to get away with changing the settings without too much distortion or loss of quality. I'll give some thought to shooting some custom backgrounds myself. Sounds like a great idea.
Thanks again
