Freezing during rendering

Post by beckydb1 »

I'm trying to render a project to mpeg-2 (DVD 4:3), but it keeps freezing at 34%. I've tried four times now. I've installed the patch and the newest directx update. I'm using Vista 64-bit. At 34% of the way through my project, there aren't any transitions, it's actually a pretty good stretch of video there.

Welcome to the forums Becky,

What does your project consist of? Are you using video clips, if so are they DV (avi), MPEG (1, or 2), DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4, WMV, MOV, MJPEG, AVCHD, HDV, (just to name but a scant few) ? To find out right-click on the clip in the timeline or library and select properties, and you can post them back here.

Another possibility would be that you are trying to render some highly compressed format like AVCHD (a popular high definition codec) and your system just isn't up to the task. Could you please post more information in your profile about your system?

Thanks vidoman! I have 4 GB of memory, 635GB of free disk space, and a dual quad processor.

The project consists solely of mpeg-2 files, a jpg image that came with the program (used as a title page for new chapters), and transitions.

I also tried just rendering straight to DVD tonight, but it froze at 38% of the way through that process.

I would say that you need to investigate what there is in that part of your project. If it is doing it at the same place (approx) each time, than there is a corruption there or something that is causing the program problems. Where did your MPEG files come from? Are they on an internal or external HDD?

You do state MPEG files, as in more than 1. Would there be a transition or some effect around that 30-40%? If so try changing the transition or just plain removing it and see if things go better.

One thing you can also try is just creating new MPEG-2 video files, using the identical properties. However do not use Smart Render. Of course choose a new name so as not to overwrite your existing video files. There might be a small glitch or corruption, and recoding it might correct it. You might also use another program like Super© by erightsoft, to recode it.

I ended up removing that one segment of video and re-adding it to the project. That seemed to do the trick. Thanks!

Onto my next project, which will be made of both mpeg-2 segments and h.264 video segments. Before I get in over my head, that shouldn't cause any problems when going to create a dvd, would it, mixing the two video types?

You can mix types, sometimes I have spliced in stuff captured from my TV card with stuff captured from my digital 8 camcorder. There are times you might also introduce "Stock material" such as opening videos or ending videos - in fact you have some of these things supplied with VideoStudio.

What is the Field Order of the mpeg-2 and h.264 video? The latter would normally be Upper Field First, but one basic rule is that you cannot mix Field Orders. So if in fact the H.264 is Upper Field First, the mpeg-2 will also need to be.

And is the H.264 standard definition mpeg-4 or high definition AVCHD? If the latter, then it is incredibly demanding of computer resources...
