AVCHD DVD vs AVCHD file playback

Post by erdna »

On my laptop I can playback FullHD AVCHD DVD's perfectly smooth in fullHD using PowerDVD8. However, the AVCHD file (.mpg) which was used to create the disc (with X2Pro) seems to stutter during payback. The PowerDVD8 info OSD indicates in both cases MPEG4-AVC and ~16Mb/s bitrate. Is this playback performance difference normal?

Are you talking about the original file, stored elsewhere on your computer and played with PowerDVD, or the AVCHD 'original' file actually on the AVCHD disc in the STREAM sub-folder? If the latter, then mine both play perfectly well in PowerDVD.

Unfortunately, I usually make my AVCHD discs from original HDV video, so I can't say for sure what any differences might be. But playing back a variety of AVCHD clips in PowerDVD -- clips which use a variety of bitrates and audio settings -- all played back quite smoothly from hard disk to PowerDVD.

As you will see from my system settings, I have a lesser Quad to yours.

Yes Ken, it's about the file created with X2Pro (from AVCHD footage) and stored on my HDD. And although I have a Quad 9300 (Vista) desktop and an Intel Duo 3Ghz(XP) on which the files play flawlessly, the problem relates to my Intel Duo 2.13 Ghz/ 4GB Ram laptop (Vista). Maybe not as fast, but what puzzles me is the fact that both playback streams ( DVD and HDD origin seem to have the same properties (e.g.bitrate) there is a different playback behaviour.

I Just verified the playback quality of the M2ts file on the DVD (Stream folder) and it stutters too, where the same DVD as disc plays OK...strange...
