Project Deterioration

Post by Gra »

Hi Guys
I'm running MF6+ (v. 6.10.0194.3). I have the following patches:
dmf6_patch_supportavchd,
dmf6_full_patch2_e,

I've made a wedding video in two parts, with a total length of 1hr 5mins. The first DVD authored was OK (apart from the two pass conversion problem in my earlier thread) and I saved the final project as I knew I'd need to run off more copies.

I reopened the project a day later to burn some more DVDs and I found I had some irritating problems. The second DVD's menu background music (left at left at the default 20secs) cut short and I wasn't too sure lip-sync was spot on throughout the movie (I thought it wasn't 100% but my partner didn't see the problem, so it was acceptable...) Similar problems in the third, where the menu music cut even shorter and lip-sync was still acceptable, albeit not spot on (in my view).

In the fourth (which was a lightscribe disc), the menu background music cut halfway through and the lip sync was really only just acceptable (now my partner could see it wasn't 100%) but halfway through the movie an earlier part of the audio track starts playing over the current audio! Do projects deteriorate like this or is there some fix or patches I've overlooked, which I should be applying? Is it best to redo from scratch eachtime?
Thanks & regards.

I don't use MF but
in MF6 when you burn a disc do you get the option to "Create DVD Folders"?
If so then I would do that then for further copies of the DVD all you need to do is to burn the two folders AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS to a DVD in any burn program. You don't need to go back to MF.
Bye the way, if you have a burner capable of 8x then turn it bck to 4x or even 2x. I don't quite know why but you get a much better burn if you use a lower than the max burn speed.
Anothe advantage is that you will also get into "Uncle Ken's" good books if you use this method :D

As John said above, if you intend to burn further copies then you do not need to open the project file and waste time rendering things again. Instead you have two options.

1. Burn to a hard drive folder.
or
2. Burn ISO

You can later burn off as many copies of your already rendered "DVD" using your favourite DVD burning software.

Many thanks Steve
Ah ha, I can see the check boxes create DVD folders (I thought I had checked them). I assume I add them to my project by clicking"add media - import DVD-Video, DVD-VR or AVCHD files from a disc or hard drive" on the start menu?

Also I'm not sure about "burn ISO" as the MF help only talks about burning data discs. It's probably so obvious I'm being a right plank, but how does that work or are there any guides?
Thanks & regards.

To burn using the DVD folders, yes you will need to import them, and rebuild your menus. DVD MF parses the VOB files and inserts the MPEG-2. To burn an ISO you need a program that used to come with VS (up to VS10), VCD DVD Disc Image Recorder. The nice thing about using ISO, is that it is an exact disc image, so you don't need to rebuild the menus. There should be a utility in Nero allowing you to burn using ISO files.

Now I really am confused. I thought the idea of burning to folders was that you could then just burn those two folders to a DVD and it would work on stand alone DVD players. It's the way I do it so that I don't have to make new menus each time, it's much quicker than going through VS every time I want a DVD. The resultant DVD's play on my TV and my small 7" portable DVD player!
I hope later this year to promote a new video for the Animal Charity I work for and this is the system I was hoping to use so that I didn't need to keep a stock of DVD's. Just burn one off using Nero as and when someone bought one. This is to be a fundraising exercise at Christmas (I was hoping).
Have I got it all wrong again?

John,
You're not completely wrong. Using DVD Folders depends on the software. Some you can use the folders and just burn your DVD, others you need to rebuild them. Now you got me looking, and since this is the DVDMF forum, it does provide the option to Burn DVD Folders directly to DVD disc..  VS burn module does not have that ability...

Thanks for your response Ron. In fact I just burn the two folders to a DVD with Nero!
Am away now to get fixed

Thanks guys for all your comments. Just so I'm clear, if I save to folder I can import and burn direct without making new menus or do I have to do the menus each time I want to burn a new disc?
Thanks & regards.

Yes, you access the Burn DVD Folders, from the Launcher screen.

Just to clarify a few points.
Burn DVD folders.
This is an exact copy of the contents of a DVD as if burned to disc.
You can use your favourite burning software to burn the folder to DVD.
The only thing you need to watch is that you select the correct form of burning from your software. Nero, CopyToDVD, and other similar burning programs will have a "Burn DVD" option. This ensures that the DVD is burnt using the correct ISO format. You must NOT use Burn a DATA disc option because it is a different ISO format - whilst a DVD burned with the DATA disc format would play on a computer it would not play in a stand alone DVD player.

Burn ISO
You could think of this like a zip file - it isn't a zip file but for the purposes of making things easy to understand think of it as you would a zip file. When you 'open' an ISO file with your favourite burning software it will correctly identify it as a DVD Video disc and not as a DATA disc.
For all intents and purposes it unzips and burns the 'DVD'.

No matter which option you go for (folders or ISO) You do not recreate any menus etc. everything is already there and intact. Think of it as you would making a copy of an existing DVD.

Thanks Steve, that is a brilliantly clear explanation (although I do a lot of advanced stuff, I'm still a bit Janet & John on the terminology). I'm still not sure how (or if) or which box to tick so I can save to ISO in MF or am I overlooking the obvious?
Thanks & regards.

Thanks so much. Today's a great learning day for me.

Imagine, we are very worried why the DVD of pictures burned by my brother-in-law cannot be opened/viewed on our DVD player.

Now, we have the answers to our questions.

Again, thank you so much.
