I had quite allot of headaches trying to find a way (many failed attempts inc access denied) to add my own WMV profiles which are usable/accessible with Corel VideoStudio X2 on the Vista OS using Windows Media Encoder 9 series.
Below is how I finally managed to apply profiles;
1 ¡V Open ¡§Windows Media Profile Editor¡¨
2 ¡V Type a name e.g. ¡§User WMV 001¡¨
3 ¡V Under Media Types tick the boxes ¡§Audio¡¨ and ¡§Video¡¨ (as this is a test leave the drop-down options as they are for now)
4 ¡V With ¡§Target bit Rates¡¨ select ¡§Add¡¨ and in the box type 500k and select NTSC or PAL (this is just to test remember)
5 ¡V Another tab should have now been added labelled ¡§500k¡¨ where further tweaking can be made, but leave alone for now.
6 ¡V Select the ¡§General¡¨ tab again and select ¡§Export¡¨ to open the ¡§Profile¡¨ Folder.
7 ¡V At the bottom of the folder type the original name again i.e. ¡§User WMV 001¡¨ and save.
8 ¡V Now select ¡§Close¡¨ (Bottom of window) and in the following pop-up select ¡§No¡¨.
9 ¡V Now open the ¡§Windows Media Profile Editor¡¨ again and select ¡§Import¡¨ look down the list in the ¡§Profiles¡¨ folder to check your new user created profile is present.
10 ¡V This should now be available within VS X2, but it isn`t SO WE SHALL NOW MAKE IT AVALIABLE.
11 ¡V Open ¡§Windows Media Profile Editor¡¨ and select ¡§Import¡¨ then High-light your newly created profile and (Right-click) select delete to the ¡§Recycle Bin¡¨.
12 ¡V Go to the ¡§Recycle Bin¡¨ and ¡§Cut and Paste¡¨ the file to the ¡§Desktop¡¨
13 ¡V Now locate the ¡§Profiles¡¨ folder on the OS Drive e.g. Computer > Local Disc (C) > Program Files > Windows Media Components > Encoder > Profiles.
14 ¡V Now Copy the File from your ¡§Desktop¡¨ into this folder after clicking continue in the administrative access denied pop-up.
15 ¡V Your new WMV Profile should now be available to select and use with Corel VS X2
16 ¡V You can also delete any of your user created profiles if you are not happy with the results, by following the path in step 13 to the ¡§Profiles¡¨ folder or by opening the folder with ¡§Windows Media Profile Editor¡¨.
It seems, so far, all other techniques to apply the profiles were unsuccessful in my case although there may well be shortcuts to the above which could be taken, if looked at in more detail or when needs require.
Hope this helps somebody, if anyone is also having trouble creating wmv profiles for VS X2.

Seems like a lot of work, could you not simply do it this way?
How to Export/Import Movie Templates
How to Export/Import Movie Templates
Access is denied...
If a wmv Profile already exists or has been created and added to the ¡§Profiles¡¨ folder (as above) then it is possible to use the Movie Template Manager.
This restricts the user (me) to selecting a pre-existing profile for a template.
Any fully wmv customised attempts using the Movie Template Manager result with ¡§Access is Denied¡¨ that is at least in my case.

I have now setup 2x common preferred mpg 16:9/4:3 templates using the Movie Templates Manager without issue so all isn`t lost, and to think I always used to apply mpg and AVI settings manually each time rather than a one-click solution.

Hi Shim. I am very glad that I can finally post here (lol, had to wait some time before I got the registration activation).
I am desperatley looking for a way to create a wmv profile in VS X2 on Vista 64 (Home edition, SP2, Intel Quad Core, 4 Gb Ram, geforce GTS 250). I've followed your every step, did it again and again. But no luck.
I have created the .prx profile, put it in the correct folder, followed all your steps to the letter, I have the latest Windows Media Encoder 9 (64-bits) and I have the latest Nvidia driver and all other latest software updates. But when I want to create a wmv movie, my profile doesn't show up in VS.
I am 100% sure that I didn't miss any step. What could be wrong?

To find/apply a created profile;
1 ¡V Import a chosen video file to convert (encode) into VS
2 ¡V Select the ¡§Share¡¨ tab > ¡§create video file¡¨ > ¡§Custom¡¨
3 ¡V With the ¡§save as type¡¨ drop down box select ¡§windows media video (wmv asf)¡¨
4 ¡V Click ¡§options¡¨ and select the ¡§profiles¡¨ tab
5 ¡V Select your newly created profile from the drop down list, click ¡§ok¡¨

Thanks for replying Shim. I still can't find the new Profile. But suddenly I saw something else:
When I want to "create video file" > "custom" > etc > "Profiles", then all kinds of other Profiles show up in the drop down list as are in my Vista Profiles folder.
I mean: in the VS drop down list I see lots of profiles that begin with 'Windows Media Video 8 for...'. But when I look in my folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles I don't see these profiles. Instead I see lots of profiles starting with 'Windows Media Video 9...' AND my newly created profile.
So it seems that VS doesn't find the correct Profiles folder, don't you think? How can I correct that?

AFAIK,,,, viewed from my system.
Corel VS already ships with a limited number of wmv profiles although these are expanded with the encoder9 series (still VERY limited though) and are present within their respective folders.
Corel VS although utilising both folders will not show duplicates and the final list available within VS will be a combination of these folders.
As such VS will show more wmv profiles than the sum of any ¡§one¡¨ of the profile folders.
Default: This equates (for me) to a total differential of 7 profiles (without additional user created profiles).
Corel profile folder = 20 profiles, Encoder9 series = 39 profiles, combined within VS X2 = 46, not 59.
So you are not able to select any specific (default) profiles from the encoder9 series folder within VS?
You mention: ¡§But when I look in my folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Components\Encoder\Profiles I don't see these profiles¡¨
