Icon trouble

Post by Kaytea »

I accidentally saved a picture I was finished working on as a UFO instead of JPG. After exiting PhotoImpact, I then deleted the two images which made up the UFO file. Now, I have a stubborn UFO icon on my dektop which refuses to be deleted - the "recycling 1 item" box comes up but says that it has discovered 0 items, and I can leave it running for ages but it still doesn't delete. I have also run my laptop in safe mode and tried to delete it there but to no avail, and I can't view the file's Properties.
I am using Windows Vista.

Any suggestions at all on how to get rid of this icon would be great, thanks.

With Vista you can hide inactive Icons that you do not use by going to Task bar and menu properties and check the box Hide inactive Icons.

I just tried doing that, but it's only hiding the icons in the taskbar and not on the desktop :?

Still no luck getting rid of the icon. I guess I'll probably just have to put up with it

Here's a long shot... try rolling back your system (System Restore) to a date just prior to deleting those image files, and see if that allows you to get rid of it..

Have you tried turning OFF your UAC and then deleting it?
If that fails I would try activating your Vista Administrator account
Logging in as an Administrator and then deleting the icon.

If all of the above fails, and you still want that nasty little critter gone... Get a really big hammer and apply 10 hard blows to your monitor screen... Viola.. icon gone.. You might have to buy another monitor though..;)

This sounds a little like a problem I was having until I found this little utility called unlocker. Worked for me, might be worth a try.

Good luck,

Dwayne,

Thanks for providing this solution. It has been placed in our FAQ Ulead Products thread.
