Regarding X2's problems with producing usable output from AVCHD, I am looking for a GOOD converter to render AVCHD (Canon's) into DVD- and SmartRender-compliant MPEG2.
Have you found some converter (free or paid) to be superior of others, especially in terms of image quality?

I am getting more and more confused with this subject. I import my M2TS/MTS files straight into VS x2 as I believe they are MPEG format files anyway. I have no problems producing standard DVD's or hybrid discs from my edited videos.
By not converting the M2TS files first I can't believe I am missing out at all but I'm still on a huge learning curve with video editing so really would like to make sure my "foundations" are secure and I am starting off in the right way.
Anything to get my bemused grey cells straightened out would be helpful

Hmm! I doubt it!Having sources in MPEG2 would allow me to avoid that.
There is a huge thread on this very subject here:
