Inconsistent Burning Problems on Video Studio Pro X2

Post by paulholdsworth »

I am new to VSP X2 and have followed the manual and the advice in the knowledge base and taken some hints from the forum but still I am unable to produce a completed video.

I have a major issues when trying to burn my project/completed MPEG file to disc. My problems are as follows:

1. The PC will hang while building the files to burn the disc. (After the chapter adding stage of create disc when you have pressed the burn icon, it will start off building the file and then hang.
2. The PC will complete sometimes part one and will start burning and then hang partway through burning. Yesterday it got to 99% of the total progress complete and 81% of the detailed progress completed and then hung.
3. It will complete a burn but will miss the end of the video.

I have manged to burn one disc using the wizard rather than full editor.

I have read the various suggestions on saving the project to MPEG and then exiting VSP and then using the MPEG file to start the burning process but none of this is working.

I have installed the latest patch as recommended and am using Direct X 10.

My video data is from my Sony DV Camcorder captured through VSP.

I take the captured data and use video editor to edit and add music from the options given in VSP. I then use the create video file option in VSP to render and create an MPEG file.

Once done I have tried both approaches of moving straight into the next stage create disc and also coming completly out of VSP and then going back in before moving onto create disc.

My current MPEG file is about 2 hours long and 5.98GB. I have added chapters about 18 I think with a main title page and chapter tiltie pages six in total. My output to disk is DVD-video In PAL. I am using Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL 8.5GB discs to record on (I have used three discs so far without producing a complete DVD. This is getting very expensive) The DVD I did produce in Movie Wizard was a normal DVD-RW 4.7GB with no chapters or title pages. MPREG FILE DATA FROM VSPX2:

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

I have tried using my original captured data and creating a new project and starting the process all over again but nothing seems to work.

Please please can someone help, I really like this software and find it easy to use but am very disappointed that my hard work is not producing any DVD's. I have recently upgraded to a Sony HD Camcorder and really need this software to work.

One other question when you are adding chapters etc before burning can you save at this point as I always seem to end up entering all the titles and chapter information everytime it doesn't burn properly?

Thanks in advance for your help and support.

Best regards, Paul

Welcome to the forums,

You're first workflow is one that seems to cause problems to a majority of the people. Jumping straight into the burn module, (Share>Create Disc) before rendering your project to a DVD Compliant MPEG-2 file (Share>Create Video). I've also noticed that you have tried the latter, however I'm curious if you first cleared your timeline, by either manually deleting everything, or just going to File>New Project? Not doing so VS will carry those project files into the burn module, and when you try to burn will render those.

Next you must be using DL discs, which are also real problematic. I've never attempted to, but have read posts on this forum, where people have problems getting VS to burn DL discs. Some will use a third-party program like Nero to burn their discs. VS is primarily a video editing application, with the built in ability to burn discs, however not the best at doing so. Since some discs are pricey, I would suggest you first create or burn if you will, DVD Folders. This way you can test out your finished product to see if everything is alright. If not, you can just delete those files, and try again, not out the cost of discs. If all comes out ok, then those folders could be burned to a disc, however VS does not provide the option to burn the folders to disc. This again is done using another program like Nero.
One other question when you are adding chapters etc before burning can you save at this point as I always seem to end up entering all the titles and chapter information everytime it doesn't burn properly?
This has been a problem for a long time, well from the time it was first introduced. For some reason VS will not maintain those Chapter title names into the burn module. The best part of this process is that it at least remembers where those chapters have been placed, just not the names you've provided.

You might consider burning your project onto 2 SL DVDs. Due to the length, there would be no way to get it to fit onto 1 SL disc using a reduced bit rate. I know you're thinking that DVDs from the store have 2 hours on them... however they use special encoders that cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $100,000 (US) and can do around 20 pass encoding. This gets the file sizes way down. They also use a stamping process to produce the DVDs not a burning process like you and I.

Hi Paul

If you are using a single layer disc then you need a video file no larger than 4.3 Gb

By reducing your bit rate to 4000 should allow for 120 minutes of video.
This should create a file under 4.3 GB.
The quality will be similar to VHS quality.

Go back to your project and Share Create Video File
Using the Custom Option set the following properties, same as you have used earlier with reduced bit rate.

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 4000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Start a new project, Share Create disc¡XAdd Video File, the one created above.

Direct X if you haven¡¦t done so, download and install the latest direct X manually.
Seems to cure things that the auto update doesn¡¦t

Something tells me that it should be Upper Field First? Or have I got that wrong?

Dear Ron,

Thanks for your suggestions I took your advice and downloaded Nero and have used this to create my final file before burning this worked very well even on the double layer discs and I am very happy with the results. I will abandon using VSP for burning and will just to stick to it for editing and you say this is what it does best.

You asked about my time line and I ahve tried it in all ways from compeletly creating a new project with a different name reimporting the DV files etc but nothing seemd to work.

Anyway the main things is I have my first completed DVD and it is really good to see my hard work in the flesh.

Thanks one again for the suggestions.

Best regards, Paul
