Single Clip Trim

Post by mitchell65 »

VS x2 Pro
I normally use Multi Clip Trim but today tried Single Clip Trim. According to the manual after trimming it says "Play Clip" but there is no Play Clip function. Also when clicking OK I would expect the trimmed clip to go either on the timeline or into the Library but it doesn't appear to go anywhere so it makes the whole process useless. I know I can use the Multi Clip Trimmer to trim a single clip but I wonder what purpose the Single Clip Trimmer serves or have I gone wrong somewhere. Here's a screenshot of the Single Clip Trim window after trimming!

Sorry John. I can't help with your problem as I have never used Multi Clip or Single Clip trim.

But I was fascinated by the image of your video clip. Having a slow day?

Smile not as this poor chap was the subject of a recent mugging by a brute of a snail, Unfortunately when asked to make a statement of what happened by the local police the slug replied "I don't really know it all happened so fast"

Ahhh, but yes single clip trim does do something....;)

Have you looked at the trim bar beneath the preview window after you have used the Single Clip Trim? Notice the Trim Handles positions, comparing that to a clip that was not processed. It appears that Single Clip Trim is just like moving the trim handles. In other words, it will only produce a Single trim on a clip, unlike the Multi-Trim, that will produce several small bits from your clip. You can achieve the same thing by just sliding the trim handles..

Can I also ask whether, after you have done your trim but not clicked OK, are the little controls below the "timeline" in that trim module inactive -- including the Play button to the extreme left of them? Or are we talking about a different 'Play'?

Ron and Ken
Thanks for your replies. To reply to Ron's points. Yes I know I can use the small trim handles to trim the clip and Ken the handles are active. The Play button is also active as my screenshot shows. When you press that Play button it plays the entire clip, not just the part of the clip shown in the screenshot as a blue line between the two handles.

The is only one "Play" button.
On page 71 of the manual it reads "Click Play Clip to preview the trimmed clip." The point is that if you look at the screenshot there is no "Play Clip" button or text. Unlike the Multi Clip Trimmer Window.
Also when the clip is trimmed and I press OK nothing happens. As I have said I would expect the trimmed clip to go either into the timeline or into the library. It does neither. I have checked to see if it gets put in a temp folder and it doesnt. Right clicking on the trimmed clip reveals nothing and Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V have no effect. All the other functions in the Single Clip Trim work and are active.
Baffling :?

Mitchell,

The only place I find to get the Single Clip Trim menu is by right-clicking on a clip in the Library. You're correct it does not place the clip into the timeline, however the trim is applied to that clip. When you drag the clip to the timeline the trim is there, as shown by the trim bar. However this is a non-destructive action, so you can undo the trim by simply dragging the trim handles out to the ends again.

I agree that maybe when using the Single Clip Trim, it should drop the clip into the timeline for you, however it leaves that up to the user. If you think about it Multi-Clip Trim does not, because the clip is already in the timeline. With Multi-Clip trim, even though it chops up the clip, you can still just grab the handles on each clip, and drag them out to the ends, and you have the entire original clip, mulitplied by the number of trims done..;)

Also if you'll notice the keyboard shortcuts shown when you hover your mouse over the Play button it states;
Play-[Space], Play Segments-[Shift + Space] or hold [Shift] and click Play
So clicking Play, plays the entire clip. This entire action is a "clip-mode" type action. So it's playing the clip that's somewhere on your system, without adding in any edits. Now to only play the "trimmed" part, press the Shift key while clicking the play button. This would be like a "Project mode" action, so the player will only play the trimmed segment, which is an editing action.

Ron, apologies for not coming straight back to you with thanks but I got a call from the Hospital on Mon evening to say they could "do me" the next day. As it is 100 miles away it takes a bit of organising so everything else went on hold. Unfortunately I got almost into the operating theatre, all dressed up in a very fetching flowery gown (I thought I looked very attractive!!!!! A view not universally shared) when they announced my operation was cancelled again for an emergency. I then had to be transported home. That's the third time I have been cancelled. I'm beginning to think it is something I have said!
Anyway a belated thank you. I am constantly moaning to myself that some members of the Forum don't seem to bother to acknowlege the help given in answering a queryand here's me doing it!
