Mother of all problems following patch installation

Hi
Forgive me for creating a new thread. This is linked to an earlier thread about problems inserting mp4 files (file format mismatch message) but is ostensibly about the impact of downloading the advertised patch.

I had previously experienced difficulty inserting mp4 files into Pro X2 prior to conversion. I was advised to use the free utility Super to convert and am grateful for this advice. In parallel I downloaded the patch and that allowed me to insert these files anyway. HOWEVER, since downloading the patch I now find it impossible to import AVI files and get the following error message: ¡§¡K¡K¡K.avi is not accessible¡¨. You then click OK and you get the subsequent message:

¡§These files cannot be added to the project¡¨.
¡§These files may be of unknown file format, the computer does not have enough memory or the file is copyright protected¡¨.

I guess most folk will jump to the conclusion that it¡¦s the copyright that¡¦s the problem as it is an avi format and I have plenty of RAM. However, I¡¦m mystified. I¡¦ve downloaded loads of these species before the patch and never had this problem (avi movie extracts from the internet).

What¡¦s equally bizarre is that when you play the avi file in Media Player you get the audio but no video. Yesterday I did manage to import one and when I clicked on the properties it showed up as video type unknown or something of that nature.

It could be the type of avi file which is now misbehaving but it seems too much of a coincidence as this has reared its ugly head just after downloading the patch.

Just wondered whether anyone else had such undesirable effects following installing the patch.

Could it be that the patch needs the Direct X and or DivX 6 codec to function? Happy to download but am now terrified about repercussions!

Many thanks for your time.

With the AVI container, it is difficult to say just what codec was used, there are literally hundreds. I don't think that the patch caused this, however may have corrected some behavior in the program that you were "getting away with".

Try downloading and running GSpot, a free CODEC information app. It should be able to tell you the correct CODEC for your "avi" files.

Super is not the "savior" of file conversion, however just one that we have found to do a good job for the price..:) I've even found a file or two that Super had problems with. Those are files created with some cheap encoder, or codec. Truthfully VS should be able to convert most video files, however as we know it does not, and it's main purpose is not conversion, but rather editing.

VLC Player by Videolan is a decent free player that will play files WMP will not. It also can provide you information about those files. Another one that I use instead of WMP is Media Player Classic. This is a very lite player, and plays most anything I throw at it. Trying different players will let you see if the video is corrupt to the extent it can not even be played. If so forget about trying to edit it..

Thanks for the prompt response. I looked at the patch attributes and could find nothing that might "correct behavior ete etc". What evidence do you have for believing that? (the files are legit and clean honest)

Just out of interest would you recommend installing the DirectX and DivX 6 codec patches?

Ultimately I guess there is no known protocol to uninstall a patch is there? I use Vista 32 bit and don't really want to reinstall the prog as I had some problems initially.

Many thanks again.

 Sorry, I meant the behaviors to mean some corruption in the video files, or DLL files of the program that may have been corrected by installing the patch, not that it was not legitimate.

It certainly should not do any harm to install the DivX6 codec. I have the Pro version of DivX installed, and learned that the most current release of DivX (7 I think) is not seen by VS Pro. So I had to reinstall the older one.

If you have not recently downloaded and ran DirectX go HERE and download the latest MS Direct-X drivers. The most current is dated March 2009.

No most of the patches installed by Corel can not be uninstalled, without uninstalling the entire program. I would not question the program as much as I would the avi files that are giving you problems.

Your comments make a lot of sense as usual and I'did slightly misunderstand but that's fine.

I guess what was really bugging me was that I had probs with inserting mp4 which the patch cured (that is listed in the attributes but I missed it!) and when I could'nt insert pure avi files I rushed to the conclusion that

a) it must be the patch and
b) it would stop me capturing from my DV

Wrong on both counts as usual

Many thanks again. I appreciate it.
