I use a custom project template, and in order to retain my fade in/out, titles/credits, etc. I set it up with video and audio clips that actually do not exist anymore. So, now the "relink" dialog comes up to allow me to replace (by relinking to another clip) and then I save the new file. This has been working fine for me for a while.

A problem occurred yesterday when I tried to relink to a video clip, and I kept getting an error stating that the file needed to be a certain length. The file was in actuallity shorter than it was requiring, so it made no sense. I was not able to find a way around it, and it was great trouble to delete the 'placeholder' clips and create new clips (with FX, etc.) from scratch.

In summary:

It seems to me that there should be an easy way to replace an existing video clip on the timeline, but I do not see it.

This also brings up the point I made a while ago about FX remaining separate objects, and not latching themselves onto the clip like they do now. This would allow the easy replacement of clips while retaining FX.

The re-linked clip must be the same duration, right down to the number of frames, or VS will not allow it.

Yes it would be nice. Some more expensive programs have a right-click menu option that allows you to directly replace clips.

VS is designed where the transition effects are applied on the video/image clips. This utilizes a single track. MSP7 used a different approach, where there was a separate track designated just for the transitions. I'm also aware of other competitor programs that use a similar approach. However Corel (and the former Ulead) wanted VS to be an easy to use, consumer level program, thus the current method of applying transitions, just drag-n-drop between clips, or as in VS Pro, dragging the clips to overlap.

I have been editing like this for over two months (about 10 videos) and it worked flawlessly. I simply replaced the video when the dialog came up...they were all different lengths. All of my titling/credits, fx, etc. stayed intact.

It just happened this one time that it would not allow me to do it.

I just did a quick test, and it look like as long as the clips are longer, you can relink successfully. The clips will be shortened of course, but you just need to stretch them back out.

This allows me to maintain a common template, so it works for now!

Yes that¡¦s correct, the re-link has to have a file as long or longer.

You should also be able to re-link Avi to Mpeg, both are video files, and Jpeg to Bmp for images.

Your best bet is to save the original files in the same location as the project *vsp file. Don¡¦t delete them.

Each time you attempt a re-link will mean you need a longer video, unless the originals are available.
VS just treats the new video file as though it has been trimmed at the end.

This reminds me of the "Smart Compositer" in MediaStudio Pro 8.
This is a good system that you have developed.
