Project properties not auto set when inserting first video

I have selected the option to not have VS warn me when I insert the first video clip that does not match the project properties, however, it is not automatically changing the properties. If I let VS prompt me and I select "Yes" when asked if I want to change the project properties to match, it works. However, if I check the box to tell VS to not prompt and always change the properties, it does not work. The properties do not get set. Anyone else experience this?

This seems to work for me, on all versions I have installed. I've tried both having the prompt each time, and also having VS not prompt, and automatically change the settings.

This only works for the first clip inserted into a new project. So if you have inserted the first clip, and VS changes the settings, then you decide you want a different clip and delete the first one, VS will not change the settings again for that project.

Where did you in fact select this option? I was not aware there was one. The only one of which I am aware is in Preferences and is the other one you mention -- where VS shows a message and if you say yes, it changes the properties.

In any case, as far as I am concerned, the Project Properties are largely irrelevant unless you eventually select Share > Create Video file > Same as Project Properties. Otherwise, your output can be anything you select, regardless of what might have been set as Project Properties.

Moreover, with high definition video these days, it is difficult -- almost impossible in some cases -- to even set high definition project properties. So if for no other reason than this, as I say, I ignore them...

I have always ignored the project properties as Ken says they make no contribution to the way VS works but being a curious old **** I thought I would take a look. Odd that I get the message "Do I want the PP to be changed to match etc" when I use the "import digital media" from folder as I do for my VOB files but it doesn't show the message when I use the "Import Video" as I do with my MTS files. I wonder why?

As I say, things are different with high definition video. The basic program was written before high def came on the scene, and though they have added lots of bells and whistles, some aspects of the program do not seem to have caught up. You also don't get the message when you use .m2t high def mpeg-2. That is what I mean by the fact that it is next to impossible to set the project properties for high def video in the first place!

I have tried changing it in the preferences not to prompt and I have also let it prompt and then when I got the warning, I checked the box to not prompt again. Either way, it does not change the project properties for me automatically unless I let the system prompt me. The reason I asked is because I thought it defaulted to the project properties when burning a DVD (especially the field order) and I always forget to change it.

Does the first inserted clip contain audio? If so what flavor, WAV, MP3? I think that the clips must have an audio track for this to work.

Yes it contains audio (Dolby Digital), but I've tried with a number of video files with different attributes.

I have just installed VS Pro X2 and I'm also not seeing it change the properties with the first clip. I tried changing the preferences to prompt me, but it isn't even giving me the prompt. What am I doing wrong?

What type of video file(s) are you inserting? This function seems to work only with MPEG (1 and 2) and DV (avi) files. Inserting WMV, MOV, DivX, Xvid, MPEG-4 and so on does not work. I also echo Ken's statement that having the Project properties match that of the first video clip is only relevant when you are going to;
1. Share>Create Video File>Same as first clip or Same as Project Settings
2. Where Smart Rendering is used.

Other than that this is mostly an irrelevant function..

Are you using High Definition video? If so, then it ignores the setting. See my comments above.

The files are M2Ts that I downloaded to practice with until my Canon hv40 arrives. So the prompts won't work with these file types. I'll be back as I get further into VS with all my questions. Thanks

The default for VS is for NTSC:

NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

I know what the default is and I know that my clip does not match that. Like I said, if I set VS to prompt me, it works fine. I get prompted, I click "yes" and the project properties change. If I set it not to prompt me, and tell it to always change the project properties, it does NOT change them. Whether its my particular installation or a bug in the software, I guess I'll just live with it.
