Problems with AVCHD transitions

Post by vancellfoto »

Hi - I'm still a newbie on videography so please bear with me :)

I have a Pansonic AG-HMC71E solid state video camera.

My computer specs are:

Laptop - Intel Pentium Dual Core
Memory - 2.5GB
System: Vista
External Drive: Maxtor 1TB
Internal Drive: 150GB

Recently I started to have problems with transitions between clips. This is shown only on TV when I convert the project to MPEG2 and
burn to DVD. On the MPEG2 file when I view it on the computer, everything is fine.

BTW I use Ulead's DVD Moviefactory to burn to DVD because it has some fantastic menus.

This is the way I work. I load all the video clips on the Library, then I convert all to smart proxy so that I can view realtime on the timeline. Then I edit were necessary the clips with the multi trim. Then after I'm satisfied I insert a transition between the clips.

After the whole project is done, I go to share video and choose the DVD pal feature and convert the whole project to mpeg.

Is there another way which I can solve this problem?

Welcome to the forums!

Now you tell us you have a problem with the transitions, but you don't say exactly what the problem is!!! However, I guess it is much the same as just about all other users of the AVCHD format have been having for simply ages, I am afraid. Please see this enormously long thread, and you will realise that (sadly) you are not alone: http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?p=170419#170419

Corel have been well aware of this bug for more than a year but have not produced any fix. I am not holding my breath...

Hi Ken, thank you for welcoming me to this forum!

Oh yes I have been reading that tread any trying to understand the nature of the problem. I have found out that normally the users are referring to HDV or AVCHD discs.

My projects all finally end up in standard DVD discs.

Well the problem is this after a transition the clip jumps/jerks a little. Now this problem has occured very recently as I have been using this VS for quite a while.

What I used to do before is that I converted all the clips into MPEG2 with the software HDwriter provided by Panasonic and everything was fine.

Now I am working on a project and found out that after very long clips (of 2 and 3 minutes) the transitions work fine but after very short clips the trouble starts.

Is there a way around this?

I am afraid that the long thread is not about HDV or AVCHD discs. It is a general problem with editing AVCHD and adding transitions, and then producing a new file. Nothing more, nothing less. And no way around... Moreover, it is not really a problem with HDV (I edit HDV all the time), only with AVCHD...

So there's no solution?

In the meantime I am going to split the project in 2 mpeg clip and rejoin them in Ulead's Movie factory. If this does not work I will retrace back and convert the AVCHD in mpeg2 clips.

Hopefully I solve this problem

Hi There!

Finally I found out why Panasonic bundled their HDWriter software with the camera.

After a painstaking job of converting all clips into MPEG2, because the software does not allow you to convert a scene into single clips but one whole clip, I had to resort to selecting scene by scene and converting each.

After this process I relinked all the clips on VS and made sure that the project had the same properties as the clips ( another painstaking job as VS does not allow batch relinking ).

After that I rendered the video by selecting same as project settings.

The rendering now was very fast for in 1/2hr the project was ready and when I played back on Windows Movie Player there were no jumps after any transition used.

As I said before my projects all end up as standard DVD or DVD DL (PAL).

I hope that this helps anyone that uses Panasonic AVCHD.
