no gap for transition

Post by Ken Veal »

When I try to insert a 4 second Roll Split effect inbetween 2 8 sec clips I get the folowing message-
For ripple editing there is no gap to apply a transition effect.
It wont allow me to insert the effect, how do I get round this?

The obvious workaround is to turn off Ripple Editing.

Are you trying to add it to the main timeline or an overlay track?

When you say a 4 second Roll Split effect. Do you mean a transition? I have just put 2 sample (came with VS12) clips onto the video track, edited the length to 8 seconds each and put a third clip on the overlay track 1. I then rippled the two tracks and dragged the Roll split transition between the two clips in the video track and edited it to 4 seconds long. It all worked fine. I don't know what version of VS you have but just in case you have VS x2 I have sent the VSP to your email address. If you have VS x2 then the links to the clips should work.

This happens when you have Ripple editing turned on for all tracks you are using. You'll need to locate which offending track needs to move along but can't because you have an object blocking it's move.

It's why it is recommended to follow the order VS tabs suggest: Edit - Effects/Transitions - overlay - (turn Ripple on here) - titles - Audio/Music. This reduces your chances of Ripple editing blocking up.

If more than one track is causing the block you'll have to workout which options will cause the least amount of manually re-aligning objects in the track - or the least fiddly option.

Transistions/ripple edit

Post by Ken Veal »

I have VS11+
I was trying to put the split transistion from the Roll gallery in the time
line.
What is the point of having ripple editing and selecting all or one track
when it can be blocked.
Sometimes you need to go back and insert a transition when you thought you have finished your editing. Then you have to turn it off and loose the point of having it, havng to realign tracks .........................Ken

I thought that too at first but now i think that there's nothing that can be done.

You can work out if a move (+ or -) will block by looking through the tracks at the point where you want to make a that alteration. Look at the time code at the point and scroll through all your tracks... if that line crosses through a solid, title, audio or video clip on another track then that too must be moved or split to unblock.

If I had to choose re alining a few audio tracks or a few dozen titles I know which one I would turn off Ripple editing.

also a tip.... I like to add about 30-60 seconds of black as a lead in at the begining of the project... this gives me some room to move to the left if I need it.

also... if you note the number of seconds & frames when you apply a change and you need to re-align an audio track (because it blocks ripple) turn ripple off for the audio track to unblock the ripple then create a black colour to the exact duration noted (when you want to move to the right)...or subtract the noted duration from the lead in black from the front of your project.

It's still fiddly but...hey...that's editing! :)
