X2 Pro Custom Profiles in Vista, HELP!

I recently had a machine fail that had Windows XP Home. So, I built a new machine that now has Windows Vista Home Premium, 64-bit. I am no longer able to create custom .wmv profiles in the "Make Movie Manager". See screenshot HERE and HERE.

Compare those to my Vista screeshots HERE and HERE.

I have tried to manually import my profiles from my XP machine. The profiles show up, but do not encode correctly. I have tried both ways according to this thread HERE

I have also installed all of the service packs, and installed the latest DirectX.

I spoke to customer support at Corel, and his XP machine was not able to create custom profiles like my old XP machine could. He said this was not a feature built in to X2 Pro.. yet my old machine could do it. Later, I got his email from him:

I've looked into it and the list generated there is from whichever encoder Windows happens to be using and isn't actually specific to VideoStudio. If that is updated to a different one than Vista might have at the moment, the options would be different.

So, I think VideoStudio depends on windows media encoder to create the custom profiles I used to have on my old XP machine. Does anybody know a fix for this problem? Or have any ideas on how to get VideoStudio to point to Windows Media Encoder custom profiles?

Welcome to the forums! And nice computer!!

All I can think to ask at the moment is whether you have downloaded (from Microsoft) the latest Windows Media Encoder 9 Series SDK. You can find it at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

From memory, it does not comes standard in your Vista installation, and VS certainly does not install it. I know that I had to download and install it manually on my own Vista Ultimate 32 bit system so that I could access the WMV high definition profiles...

Hmm... Good question.. I think I installed version 10.. maybe I need to uninstall 10 and go back to 9.

I'll try that and report back.

I guess I read that incorrectly.. I have Windows Media Encoder x64 Edition 9 series version 10.0.0.3809...

I'll try the older version

See my edit above for the x64 link. As far as I was aware, there is no release version of version 10 available at the moment. Certainly, the Microsoft site contains no reference or links to it that I can find. The current page (apart from the download link I gave above) is at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window ... fault.mspx and only refers to Series 9 for both 32 bit and 64 bit systems...

So..

I installed the 32 bit version of Windows Media Encoder on my 64-bit Vista machine against the advice of Microsoft.

Now I am able to create custom profiles in VideoStudio for .wmv's just like on my old XP but, it crashes in the process.

So, it is something to do with the difference between Windows Media Encoder 32-bit, and 64-bit.

I am guessing the different file structure is what is breaking the link between VideoStudio.

So, I might have fixed it..

Uninstalled everything..

Installed 32-bit Windows Media Encoder
Installed a patch for it, found HERE
Copied over my .prx profiles from my XP machine and put them in the encoder profiles folder.
Installed X2 Pro again
Installed updates for X2 Pro

Seems to have worked.. probably need to trial run a few more vids.. But I'll let the board know.

Been meaning to respond to this thread for a while.

Firstly, I used to be able to choose from media 9 series encoders for wmv custom files but since I've had to re format my HD a couple of months ago they seem to not be available.

I've just installed the 64bit WME9 and they still don;t come for selection in VSx2pro.

Will keep playing with it when I have a chance and perhaps even follow the fix Dudwanarace suggested but it seem a long way to fix it.

I'll report back if I find a fix that doesn't involve doing re-installations

Re-installing may not be needed.. I would try and install the 32-bit Windows Media Encoder. Then install the patch for it, from the link above. That will keep it from crashing. Then it should work.

Does VideoStudio work with Windows Media encoder X64? You are not suppose to install both WME x86 and x64. X64 has more features including full VC1 support. My initial test seems to show it won't allow you to edit or create profiles without the x86 version(I tested with both versions installed). Not sure what breaks with both installed but when I first was installing x64 WME gave me a warning and at that point I had uninstalled x86.

No, I can not get it to work at all with WME X64. I think the main problem is the basic file structure is different. Meaning, things are in a different directory on the drive. So Video Studio can not find what it needs. The only way I could get the X86 encoder to work is to make custom profiles and import them into WME. Then you can use those custom profiles in Video Studio, just not edit them.

To me, this is a huge problem that should be fixed.
