Problems with Cancel Burn, Create Chapters, and Preview

I am using VS12 Pro X2 on a Vista 64 machine. I noticed these problems:

1. The Cancel Burn button does not work (does nothing);
2. The Create Chapters button crashes the program;
3. After selecting Create Disc and unchecking the Create Menu box, the Preview function does nothing.

Any responses?

Re all of your comments: It has become almost a mantra with me over the past couple of months to suggest people first go to the Microsoft DirectX website and download the latest update patch. The current one is dated March 2009 and can be found at http://tiny.cc/qb58I

Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in VS11 in particular -- and now also in X2 -- which appear linked to Windows updates. The menu preview , 'building preview graph' and other problems in the burning module seem to be amongst them.

Note that DirectX is not included in the usual pattern of Windows automatic updates. It has to be done every so often by the user manually. So unless you have recently done this, you are probably still using the original, non-updated version of DirectX which came with your computer.

Re (3): I thought the Preview related specifically to previewing how the menu looks, nothing else. So if you don't have a menu, obviously you would not be able to see anything.

Ken,

The computer has DirectX 10.1. Anyway, I ran the update with no effect. With regard to item 3, when you select not to create a menu, then the next screen shows a handheld control. But it doesn't do anything.

Re 3 -- my point still holds. You still get that screen, but if there is no menu, there is nothing to preview. Yes, perhaps in that case that screen should not appear, but we don't control the programming of the software (unfortunately!!!)

Sad that the DirectX update didn't affect anything -- it usually fixes up most problems in the menu/burning module...

What Preview function are you referring to, the virtual Remote Control? If that is the case then yes, you should be able to see your video when you press play, regardless if it has a menu or not.

I had a similar problem some time ago. I updated my DirectX and re-installed the software, and that fixed the problem. Maybe it was a combination of the two...

Hi Black Lab,

When you select "Share > Create Disc > DVD", uncheck "Create menu", and hit "Next", you see a virtual Remote Control. It does not work.

I took your suggestion and uninstalled and reinstall VS12. No difference, except for I thought that the crashing when selecting "Create chapters" was not happening. But then I realized that it seems to be happening with Blu-ray, but not with DVDs.

I also notice that I sometimes get a crash when I elect to erase a disc before burning.

This software is less than wonderful, isn't it? In my professional life as an engineer, I am not used to such pitiful work.

Don't be so quick to judge. The software works fine for me. Maybe there is another problem. Please read the following thread and provide as much info as possible:

I suspect that the problems are related to the fact that I am using the 64-bit version of Vista. The fact that I see crashes only sometimes when repeating the same operation (like erasing a disc) points to a software bug.

Preview etc. won't work

Hi, I just noticed your post and suggest that you see mine raejohn under the heading unable to preview. The reason I am saying that is I was advised that the Direct X download does not load automatically or in the same manner as other downloads. In my post there are instructions to do the download. After I followed the instructions I was able to preview. Good luck

Your other post mentions running dxdiag to determine the version of DirectX that is running. Mine is version 10 (this is the latest Vista version). SP1 for Vista includes an update to make it version 10.1, although it does not say "10.1" in the dxdiag window. (The latest Vista service pack is SP2.) BTW, according to Wikipedia, version 11 of DirectX is due to be available in October '09.

Yes, but version 11 is for Windows 7 which is released in October. It's part of the package...

According to Wikipedia:

DirectX 11 6.01.7600.16385 Windows Vista, Windows 7 July 22, 2009

Well, I won't comment on how Wikipedia may not always be the most reliable source of information on something new. But I *would* suggest you also do further checks because there has been (reliable?) talk that the version of DirectX 11 which is available for download in fact is a sham containing trojans, and an earlier version of DirectX at most.

As far as I am aware -- and happy to be corrected (reliably) -- the version of DirectX currently available is only available with the release candidate of Win 7 (build 7100). When they do release the full version in October, it will -- apparently -- be compatible with Vista as well as Win 7.

And if you don't believe me, go searching on the Microsoft website for DirectX 11...

Hi

When I access the link for direct x update http://tiny.cc/qb58I
I select download and am given the option to Save or Run.
I have always selected Save option, extracting and running the files from my hard drive.

We are aware that the auto Windows Update does not help and that a manual approach does fix many problems.
I can confirm that the update has fixed problems on Vista and XP, at least for me.

My question is ¡¥do you get the same files when you select Run and Save?¡¦

Or does the ¡¥Run¡¦ option access the auto windows update files?

With DirectX, I always assumed that the 'Run' option meant that the downloaded files were installed and extracted in the Temp folder, wherever that happens to be on your computer depending on the OS. Then it was automatically run from there and, in theory at least, the temp files were deleted once installation was complete.

With the Save option, the files are downloaded and installed in the Temp folder, but you are then asked where you want them extracted to. And then you have to run dexsetup.exe from that extraction folder. But after installation, it is then up to you to manually delete that folder...
