mini DV help

I am using the trial version, and am trying to get video from my mini DV camcorder to my hard drive, and later to DVD. Do you have to have a firewire connection to do this? I have a USB connection, but it won't let me scan the tape in VS9

MiniDV requires a IEEE 1394/FireWire/iLink connection. USB connections generally only support streaming video at webcam resolutions.
