DV or Mpeg

Post by Nunk »

hi,

Just a quick question once you capture in DV and then convert to mpeg on your pc. Is there any disadvantage from an editing point of view.

The reason i want to do this is that i want to transfer the video elsewhere for editing via internet download.

This would cut a 12 gig captured DV tape down to maybe 4gig! This would be faster from a downloading point of view.

Is there any downside when i edit the converted mpeg that was originally captured in DV format on my pc.

Thanks in advance

Well, the conversion from DV (which is a relatively lossless high quality format) to mpeg-2 (lossy, more compressed and depending on the properties used can be high quality down to poor) is already one generation of loss of quality. Then you edit it and depending on what you are doing with it, at least part of it will be further recoded (if you use SmartRender) or fully recoded (if you don't). So that would be another generation of quality loss. If you keep it at this number of recodes, then -- again depending on the quality (i.e. bitrate) settings you use -- your eyes might not notice too much loss in quality. But the loss in quality will definitely become noticeable (1) if you use low quality bitrates e.g. 4000 kbps or lower; or (2) the more recodes you do.

Maraming salamat Ken,

I was thinking to still keep the bitrate high say 8000 on the DV convert to mpeg, my aim is the get the 12 gig per tape down in size so that its easier to download.

I will then edit the converted mpeg and then create the final mpeg then create a DVD at a variable bitrate of 8000.

So all in all it would only be 2 recodes.

Have a great day
