iphoto slideshows seem very nice, however any ideas as to how they could be done in VS ?

Yes they do have some nice slide show templates. Most of them can be replicated in VS. It's just a matter of using a scrapbook image as your background, and then overlaying your photos. For example in VS X2, use one of the Frames, (F06) that looks like a photo album in overlay track#1. Then place your images in the Main video track. You can choose whatever transition between the images, and also apply pan/zooms to your images.
Do you have any image editing or graphic illustration software? If so you can create a scrapbook image to use in VS.
In your other post about the Old Film template in VS9, create a short clip using that, and in the editor look at what the wizard used to create it. Everything is there to reproduce it manually. Looking at the projects created by the Wizards will help you to learn how to create your own original projects...
