File Size

Post by sportswizdan »

Hi...
I captued my video to DV-AVI. I rendered it to Mpeg and also AVI. Why are the file sizes so different and to my previous post...which one-if either-is a better option for rendering before burning to DVD?

3.91 rendered to AVI
1.09 rendered to Mpeg

This was the exact same vsp project rendered to both formats.

Thanks, Dan

I see from your subsequent post that you did get it straight. Always a bit confusing at first.

MPEG is much more compressed than AVI -- should always be about 1/3 the size. So the typical hour of AVI material fills 12+GB at a high-quality setting, but this renders to MPEG at about 4GB, which fits the DVD.

 anything that gets rendered to DVD is in mpg2 format, that is the standard. you cannot author an avi file to DVD. If you use avi source to author a DVD, the software you are using will render it to mpg first.

The file size of an avi is so much bigger because it is not compressed.

AVI files are just containers -- their contents CAN be compressed, it's a question of selecting a codec and configuring it if applicable.
