Transitions
I am trying to add a transition effect to a video. I add between clips, I can see it sitting there, in the time line, but when I preview there is no transition effect. This is with 2 video clips, with 2 images all is ok. Do transitions only work with images? The transition also works when an image is placed before or after a video clip. They are the stock transitions that came with VS 12.

No, transitions are meant to work between two video clips.
Are the video clips on the main video track or on one of the overlay tracks?
What transition are you using? Have you tried other transitions?

Are you doing your transitions like this:
How to fade into the first video Clip or out of the last video clip
Substitute the black colour clips in the image for other video clips.

I was working in both, main and overlay. I have read both posts and it does work in the main track now, not crisp and clean but I can see the transition I hope maybe it will be better when rendered. I have not tried an overlay track, because by your reply, Jeff, I assume not to use the overlay for transitions. I was trying to use the Wipe..... Slide transition. The others including Wipe Slide I have tried all have the same result, jerky and not crisp.

If you are going by the preview, then forget it. Two times out of three, when previewing (obviously, in Project mode), my transitions -- even normal, vanilla flavoured cross fades, either don't show, or else are jerky or erratic. But when rendered, they are all there, smooth as silk. And that goes for both standard and high definition projects...

No, in v12 (X2) you can use transitions in the overlay track. However, they work a little differently than in the main video track. In the main track you can just double-click on a transition or drag it to the timeline and it will automatically be inserted between your two clips. With the overlay tracks you must manually overlap the two clips to insert the transition. I was just trying to make sure you were doing it correctly.I have not tried an overlay track, because by your reply, Jeff, I assume not to use the overlay for transitions.
But I am really surprised by Ken's reply. I have a measly P4 with 1GB of RAM, far inferior to Ken's system, yet I have no problems whatsoever playing transitions.

Man, you guys are all really great. I wish I could buy you all a round of Pisco Sours. I hope this will answer what type of video I am editing: Microsoft avi file, Frame 29.97 Data 568 Compression SEDG video decoder 24 bits 720x480.
I am happy with the Wipe Slide Transition, now I want the slide to stop about half way and stay there for the whole clip. Is that possible?

Yes stop the transition half way and extend it for the entire video clip. If you have the time look at this http://www.mediacollege.com/video/speci ... creen.html That is what I am trying to do.

It used to be free but unfortunately they now impose a charge.
