Cannot Open File - 3.0SE and 4.0 hang-up

I have 3.0SE from an ADS bundle. I have an external USB/IEEE DVD burner. Everything woked great for a about 2 weeks then and now nothing. I have tried the same on 2 different home comlputers. I even tried the 4.0 Trial. I down loaded it yesterday. I get to the point of opening the file and the computers will hang. Then there is the PROGRAM UNRESPONDING error message. One computer is 1.2Ghz w/ 512RAM and the other is 2.1Ghz w/ 256RAM. Now, the next day after nstalling the 4.0 trial version, the DVD "G" drives shows as "non-accessible" - on both computers. I am running XP and have not made any changes. I turn off the firewall, unplug the DSL and turn off the antivirus software when running the MOVIEFACTORY. The CPU usage runs at 98 to 99 with little RAM usage. HELP!!! Please!!! I reviewed the previos posts an dthere were some close but none with the opening the software.
