I am looking to buy a compact camera which only supports H.264 (it's a samsung) which is supposed to do good 720P HD.
Any idea if H.264 is supported adequately or if I am wasting my time?
cheers!
H.264 - can it be imported into MSP8?

Sorry for the lack of response. I don't have a camera that uses that codec, and don't have MSP8 installed on the PC I currently have access to. However the following is taken from the Full Features pdf file for MSP8..
With that, I would have to conclude, no it does not..

That sounds like a good option. If you need a converter....
Super
This piece of software converts almost any video format into almost any other video format. Very useful if you've downloaded DivX Xvid or MPEG4 files off the internet and then find you are having difficulty editing them due to their highly compressed nature.

thanks for the tip on the converter.
so ... if I do manage to edit my high def avchd movie in ulead, what are the odds of me being able to render a decent high-def final movie?
Presumably such a thing reduces the benefits of getting hi def in the first place?
Should I not bother with MSP8 for this or just go to videostudio or vegas?
I really need people's thoughts on whether I should give up on my $400 investment for hi def?

I am still in the age of SD so cannot comment upon how well things down convert. What I would suggest though is that you download the various trial versions of any programs that you may wiish to consider so that you can do a test run of them using your own computer and equipment.
Often what works on one persons computer/equipment doesn't fair so well on anothers.

Re: H.264 - can it be imported into MSP8?
Hi, Octavious. I bought a Flip Ultra in July and have really enjoyed it, but it won't go directly from it to MSP 8.0. I have to convert the video to MPEG 2 format, then it will come in. I'm not trying for HD, so I can't tell you what would happen to the quality if you're going for it. But the quaility I'm getting at SD is great. I have a MiniDV camera and I shot a video with both cameras and when I got them rendered and ready to go to DVD, I couldn't tell any difference.
There is a plug in for MSP 8.0 that you can get for 29.95 on the website that is supposed to let you save to MP4 format, but it's not the H.264. I waisted my money on it and then I wasn't able to even render to MPG format without the system crashing. I've got that fixed now, so I don't recommend it to anyone.
Here's my saga: http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... highlight=
Good luck.

MSP8 only supports MPG2 HD (eg, HDV video- tape), not AVCHD.octavious wrote:thanks for the tip on the converter.

While you could transcode the H.264 to HDV MPG2, that could work, but would be a LOT of time/effort/disk space wasted, and possibly some quality lost (HDV is 1440x1080, not 1920x1080 which many AVCHD are),
and then if you decide to make a Bluray or AVCHD disc to play back in BluRay player, you will have to re-encode BACK to AVCHD H.264 video which takes FOREVER.
Much better to use VideoStudio or Vegas etc something which works directly w/ AVCHD H.264, and then you can smart-render to make a disk/video to play back on bluray etc.
If you have an HD Tivo, then might be useful to render HDV MPG2, it will play that back fine..
