24p playback

mankhan wrote:Dear Steven,

This is mankhan here, if you so remember. Had discussion in forum on playback of blu-rays on xp, vista or windows 7.

Since I know that you are very much experienced and knowledgeable in this field I hope you may help me or guide me at least.

I have a PC with following configuration:

1. Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 GHz Q6600 (64-bit)
2. Intel Motherboard dp35dp
3. 6 GB RAM
4. PCI-e graphic card nVidia Geforce 8600 GT 1 GB RAM
5. LG Blu-ray/HD-DVD drive
6. Win DVD 9 blu-ray
7. OS Vista ultimate 64-bit and now Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
8. Panasonic Projector pt-ax200 24p fully compatible

I am using WinDVD perhaps since the beginning when DVDs started and now we are in era of blu-ray which indeed amazing invention. You have since long All2HD feature in WinDVD where in smooth panning feature also there and it works excellent on DVDs.

However, same feature is not working on blu-ray movies. As far as I know all blu-ray movies are shot in 24p and corel.com also mentions on promotional pages that WinDVD 9 fully complies with 24p. On my display nVidia Ge-Farce display drivers (control panel) I can select 23, 24, 50, 59 and 60 Hz refresh rates and I believe that choosing 23 or 24 Hz means 24p, am I right?

When I play blu-ray disks on WinDVD 9 blu-ray I choose 23 Hz or 24 Hz refresh rates but still I do not get smooth panning and I feel vibrations/judders on panning shots. rest is all fine.

Is there any way I can achieve full 24p smooth panning shots without judders/vibrations on objects in panning shots?

I shall be very much thankful if you could give me some advise on this issue.

By the way I am a pharmacist from Pakistan but working as Intellectual Property Agent in Saudi Arabia in a law firm advising pharmaceutical companies on their legal issues concerning their trademarks and patents in Saudi Arabia. DVDs and blu-rays are just my hobby since almost 12-13 years so you can talk to me in any computer language as you deem appropriate.

Thank you and best regards

Are you sure the problem is WINDVD? Try downloading a trial of one of the competitors like PowerDVD. That would help you narrow the problem. It might be a driver issue, maybe a setting in the driver or something in the setup. Are you getting this issue with all of your movies? If your projector is 24p compliant you should be able to get smooth judder free viewing. Does your projector actually require your video output to be at 24hz? Some projectors need a higher refresh rate and they then convert that to 24fps.

24hz is nothing to do with fps, it is the refresh rate.
I'd also go with a setting in windvd, the graphics card or the projector.

glad you two bothered to post comments, usually no member bother to post here if you see threads you shall see many views but no post by viewers. Dont know why? Perhaps winDVD 9 problms are not solvable.

Well if you see my post above in detail you shall see i have mentioned all my issues in detail. I believe that perhaps you use small monitors so that you dont feel judders or vibration on objects while they are in panning shots when camera moves from right to left or vice versa. I notice it a lot on big screen, imagine sitting 14 feet close to 150 inch screen.

When i use 23 or 24Hz refresh rates my projector immdiately recognize signals as 24p as i can see it in manu but every software reacts differently to refresh rates. I have tried both TMT3 and PowerDVD 9 and both do not support 24p like WinDVD 9. Although they claim 24p support in the detailed information on WinDVD 9 on their website but actually it does not. All2HD feature which is very good and gets activated when you play DVD, you can see that picture becomes very smooth in panning shots but as soon as you insert blu-ray that smooth panning is gone.

I believe that choosing 23 or 24 Hz means 24p, am I right?

I was replying to this bit.

24Hz does not mean 24p. Now if your hardware is not set up correctly then having a refresh rate matching the fps may well give a smoother looking picture, but it is not the correct way to go about it.

I can't see any other issues and without coming and experiencing your problem, I can't see a way forward for me to help, sorry.

you are probably right, but i am experiencing strange attitude from the whole setup. I have some HD-DVDs such as superman returns and i noticed that i am having smooth panning in this movie and when i checks in information tab in windvd i found that it says 29.97 fps so no matter i use 50Hz or 60Hz on my PC i get smooth panning with no any problems. I have some more HD-DVDs and blu-ray (some documentaries) which have 29.97 fps and all works excellent on my system but as soon as i insert any blu-ray movies which almost 99.9% shot in 23.976 fps no matter i use 23 or 24 or 50 or 60 Hz, i still get judders (vibrations) only on panning shots.

When i use 23 or 24Hz refresh rates my projector says 1080/24p and when i use 50Hz my projector says 1080/50p and when i use 60Hz my projector says 1080/60p which means refresh rates of 24 Hz means 24p, and so on otherwise why my projector would say so.

I wonder no one like to talk on 24p issue. The link over here
http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... bview=tab2

New! Digital Natural Motion
Keep fast-moving objects sharp and crisp using the latest motion compensation technology. The software detects the original frame rate (24, 25 or 30 frames per second) and intelligently fills in frames on the fly to create judder-free playback at all frame rates.

cleary claims 24p playabck but it is not clear whether it is for SD or Blu-ray playback. Perhaps Steve Jones would take this matter with software crew and ask them whether winDVD 9 supports 24p for blu-ray or not. I have tried playing back many many blu-ray discs with WinDVD 9 and non have smooth panning. Only AL2HD works excellent for SD (DVDs), perfect smooth panning.
