Audio format compatibility

I seem to be experiencing some inconsistencies with audio format types. For example, I can play a 44khz 24bit audio file in the Media track by itself, but it plays back as (what sounds like) white noise when I play all tracks. I am on a brand new system, and I simply imported my projects, so I think this was working. Am I missing codecs? Is there a specification somewhere for imported media?
Thanks,
JR

There are dozens or perhaps a hundred or more different audio formats.
Some are more favourable than others such as LPCM or WAV whilst other formats are more compressed and sometimes create issues.
Several users have reported problems with MP3 audio that was created with a
LameEnc Encoder.

Again, my apologies for lack of details...
VideoStudio Pro X2 (12.0.98.1)
Windows XP SP3 32 bit
The file format is .wav, 44khz, 24bit, stereo mixed down from Cubase 5. I see now that I converted to 16 bit to get things to work in my other projects...shouldn't I be able to use 24 bit?
Thank you,
John

This is a consistent re-creatable problem.
- Import a 44khz 24bit PCM .wav file to the Audio Track (I simply converted one of the library wave files).
- Play just the audio track (it plays fine)
- Now play all the tracks.
The audio plays fine separately, but when you try to play back video and audio, the audio is nothing but white noise.
At least this happens to me with VS Pro X2. Is VS Pro X2 not capable of playing 24 bit audio with video?
The work-around is to convert the 24 bit file to 16 bit.

How are you converting it? Maybe try a different converter and see what happens.

I am using exports from Cubase 5. I have tried .wav, .aif, and .wma at 44 khz 24 bit...and .wma is the only one that seems compatible. The annoying part is that they all play fine from the track by themselves (and when you preview from the file chooser) but you get very loud white noise on the .wav and .aif files when you play all tracks.
Cubase does have a few options for the export like include iXML chunk and extended .wmv format, but it makes no difference.
So for now, the best 24 bit option from Cubase seems to be .wma (or convert everything to 16 bit).
Again, this is on my system, so it may be different for other configurations...which is what I would like to know. Does 24 bit .wav or .aif audio work for you?
Thanks,
JR
