Some preloaded still title clips start with a fade-in, but stop abruptly. Is there a way in VS12 to edid these titles e.g. apply a fade-out, or add a reversed part in order to get a title fade-out?

Yes...
Create your title then drag it up into the Title Library.... this creates a copy of your title.
Now from the title library drag the copy back down and place it beside the first one. you should have two title exactly the same.
Fade the first one in and the second one out....

And if you want the title to stay on screen a bit longer, add a third copy in between the two that neither fades in or out.

Thanks but I think I don't get it yet. Take for instance the default "the end" title in the title library. It starts with a fade-in but no fade-out at the end. My question is how can I fade-out that title?

If you are using the defualt that's fine.... drag it down twice from the library.
Click on the second one... in the Title control panel click the animation tab and select the fade out animation icon
