Problems w/Videos from New Camera - Creative Vado HD

I just purchased a Creative Vado HD video camera. The native files on the camera are .avi in 720p format. Windows Media Player 11 plays them without a problem.

VideoStudio 11 and 12 play them only when I select one video and "clip" mode. When I select "project", then play I only get audio with a black screen.

I thought maybe if I convert the video that would help, but I just get an "Insufficient Memory" error. I am unable to convert these videos to any format within VideoStudio.

The Video Codec is "HDX4 H.264 Decoder (Creative) ver.: 1.2.9.515."

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the link. That was a lot of info. Strange thing unlike the other OP VS 11 and 12 don't have a problem playing the video, just rendering and converting. I did a search for the errors before posting and did see quite a few others receiving "Insufficient Memory" errors, which is obviously not the case. I have a Dual 2.2GHz w/3GB of ram running Vista Premium.

One of the reasons I purchased the camera was the native .avi format. I guess I will look for a batch convert program that can convert these files to a VS supported format. The packaged program can convert the files to .wmv 720p format, but only 1 at a time. Hopefully this file format will be supported in the near future or creative will produce a firmware upgrade that changes the codec.

I am going to keep the camera as it creates amazing videos. My wife, who hates using a standard video cameras, likes this one so much, she asked me to buy her a Vado HD of her own. Check it out if you like.

Just to correct one minor misapprehension you have. You say you bought it because it films in 'native .avi'. In fact, there is only one 'native' .avi format, and that is uncompressed .avi, which is absolutely huge, running at around 65 GB (yes, GB and not MB let alone KB) per hour of video. Apart from that there are literally dozens of different video formats which use the .avi extension, which in that context is only a wrapper. Apart from the raw .avi I mentioned above, there is also DV/AVI which is also large at 13 GB per hour. But at the other end of the spectrum, there are highly compressed mpeg-4 type formats, such as DivX and XVid, which also call themselves .avi... And now we can add your Vado format to the growing list which uses the H.264 and apparently films up to 1280 x 720p. I am not sure why they use the .avi extension and not something else, though. Must be a Creative quirk...

But anyway, from this you will see that getting the codec right is no simple matter...

Have you had any luck with this problem? I'm getting the same error when trying to edit the Vado files in X2. I installed the codec that comes on the Vado HD device, but the files are still registering as CoreAVC decoder, codec type.

Not sure what to try next.

Well, I hope chscott replies and can offer some help. As it is the only other thing I can think of is to suggest you make a copy of a couple of your clips (just to be on the safe side), and change the extension of those copies from .avi to .mpg, and see if that makes any difference to things.
