jerky/sticky rendered footage VS11+

Recently my rendered clips have been coming out with random jerky/sticky bits. If I re-render they appear at some point else. This has only just started happening during the last 10 or so hours of rendering I have done. It is also worse on some footage, and hardly happens at all on other footage??

I have rendered using the same settings I have always done, nothing has changed. I have tried doing the rendering on VS9 and VS11+, on two different laptops, one with Vista and one with XP - the same randomness. The last major issue I had with audio being out of sync was cured by uninstalling all VS programs from both laptops and reinstalling.

1)footage comes from DV transferred to the computer via firewire
2)rendered as -

Lower Field First

(SMART RENDER OFF)

Are you rendering the same footage when you do the tests with the two laptops? If so, try using separate footage so we can eliminate the clips as the problem. (Use clips from a previous project that has rendered ok.)

Does the rendered project play ok in the VS preview window, or does it only happen after uploading to YouTube? What I'm seeing looks like a YouTube issue.

Youtube wasn't ideal, but I was hoping it would work. The most obvious bit of it that isn't youtube is 00.16-00.19.

I have tried the same bit of DV and converted in on both laptops to try, same result, but at different intervals. First time the jerkyness was at the beginning and second time somewhere in the middle (although the odd bit pops up here and there throughout).

The problem happens when it is rendered to PAL DVD, and the jerkiness is seen through every media player and on the TV when burned to DVD.

Like I said, I would try rendering dv clips that you rendered ok in the past, just to rule out a problem with your current clips.

Unfortunately from my workplace I am unable to view the YouTube video.
I have previously had problems with jerky clips - somewhat resembling a wrong field order (Which yours do not appear to be wrong) and eventually tracked down the problem to a loose IDE cable between the motherboard and the hard drive. Although the cable looked secure, a good push with the thumbs did the trick.

I have tried rendering a DV tape from about 3 years ago and still getting the jerky footage. I have experimented by rendering a particularly bad 10 second clip by changing the settings on few things. When rendered to WMV the footage is smooth, and then with PAL DVD I clicked on the "two pass encode" which seemed to work perfectly; although this took about 4 hours to render 20 minutes of footage!

Any ideas what is going on with my mpeg2 PAL DVD encoding? and what is "two pass filter"?

With regards to the led to the motherboard, I am using a laptop, and I have never touched the inside of a computer. Besides, the same results are happening from two laptops.

We could do with a bit more information about your 2 laptops.
You have Windows XP but which version and which service pack level.

E.g. Windows XP Professional Service pack 3.
Also your motherboard, video card and audio card.
I would suggest you download and run Belarc Advisor

Have you updated Direct X to the Latest Version

I have now been able to view your You Tube Video and can see it sort of freezes for a fraction of a second every now and again. Definitely not a field order problem but could be that you hard drive(s) may need defragmenting.

Thanks for info. I have downloaded that Belarc program and will put the details here after I run a defrag. I haven't done a defrag for a while, as I thought that my Norton 360 is set up to do it automatically.

360 will do an auto defrag. Check to see if it is set up. Open Norton 360 Click "Settings" then "Tasks Scheduling" then next but last on the list make sure that "Disc Optimisation" box is checked. Click "Apply" then "Close".
Personaly I always used Windows Defrag as well, it will always tell you if defrag is necessary!

I have done the defrag and it didn't do a thing. I have just rendered a DV tape I filmed about 2 years ago, and the first 15 seconds is choppy, then smooth (I don't know if there is any further choppy footage later as it would take the hour to watch it all). I ran a couple of little tests, first rendering the first 15 seconds, which came out smooth?? then a whole minute - the first 15 seconds of this was choppy again. I then rendered the first minute in VS9 and no choppiness?? I am going to render the whole thing in VS9 to see if there is any change there. I AM READY TO PULL MY HAIR OUT!

Well it appears that actually my VS11 is crap. At the time I thought it was VS9 as well, but have been rendering in VS9 and it is fine. So current issues I have with VS11 are 1-rendering to PAL DVD results in jerky footage, and 2-crashes when I add chapters before burning a disc. I am just going to use VS9 for rendering and VS11 for editing. I bought VS11 on eBay quite cheap, it appears to be a proper copy and has a code and everything, but has there been any issues with people buying copies on eBay which they have had problems with??

There's known problems such as pirated copies, and freebie versions (SE, VE) being sold. One commonality with pirated software is the KeyGen supplied, to generate a product key or serial number. While I have purchased and sold items on Ebay, I never have or will buy software from there. It's not really much cheaper, considering the risk you're taking. They could even plant viruses in the software...

I agree with Ron as far as Ebay is concerned. I very nearly fell for cheap software on Ebay once sometime ago and found it was a University student copying "educational Microsoft software". I informed the Vice Cancellor. never heard back but it made me very cautious. I did though buy my VS 12 from Amazon but that was only a tiny bit cheaper than Corel shop but it did come in a box with a manual which is I find more useful than the downloaded version of the manual.
